I’ve been using Linux since about 1995 and Ubuntu since 4.10 “Warty Warthog”, and have installed and used every single version ever released. I have been a member of the Ubuntu-Users mailing list since it opened to the public, and have been answering people’s questions and trying to help there for 20 years now. I’m also on the UK-Users and Xubuntu-Users mailing lists, and was active on Sounder. When I lived in London I was a regular attendee of the launch parties, starting with 5.04, and have attended all 3 (public) Summits so far.
I am fond of the Unity desktop, happily run Ubuntu Unity, and have contributed a few ideas and suggestions to that product (such as a task manager and text editor which integrated with that desktop better than the GNOME ones).
I think my oldest running install started out as 13.10 “Raring Ringtail” and it still works well.
I’m also occasionally active in Reddit /r/ubuntu and on AskUbuntu (over 600 rep.)
I have been on Launchpad since 2006. (I do not really actively use Discourse, Discord, or IRC, though.) I am at the Summit in the Hague right now, though, so maybe we can do the meeting IRL.
I have never worked directly for Canonical, but I have worked for both Red Hat and SUSE. I have reviewed multiple versions of Ubuntu in published media, including what I think are two of the only group tests of the official remixes with resource usage comparisons: in 2013 and again in 2022.
I am very happy to take the blame, if any. If for some reason, this turns to be a good idea, all the praise goes to @lproven .
Liam has been writing about the good, the bad, and the ugly of Ubuntu over many years. He kept the project honest, and on its toes in a gracious way for such a long time. If advocacy counts towards an Ubuntu membership, I feel that Liam should be an “Ubuntu ProAdvocate”
Very knowledgeable Ubuntu and Linux nerds like us, always testing new tech and attending events, chatting with everyone, and keeping the morale up. A very joyful and honest person, I would love to see him in the ranks of the Ubuntu members!
To say the least your application comes as a surprise. It is difficult to come up with a response to one of your status and abilities.
However, when you gain the recognition of Ubuntu Membership there will be expanded interaction within the community — may I humbly suggest that you update your Launchpad profile page ?
Mr. Liam!!! The dinner was awesome and so were the men. You and Till both are the oldest computer scholars I’ve ever met! Learnt so many things, and the lovely conversations!! Hope we meet again next year!
