Hello,
I’ve been thinking lately (most days in fact, usually anyway), about life, the universe, and everything, and part of that thinking is challenging myself on everything from trying to explore the world more, to what I spend my free time on, tech and community included. With that in mind, I thought maybe it’s time try something new, for me.
About me
I’ve used Ubuntu since 2006. I was around 10-11 at the time, and learned Linux the traditional way; by force, as I learned through experience about bootloaders and how not to break them.
As early as then, I was actually somewhat active on the official IRC, giving advice about people’s /etc/fstab/
- I can actually still remember my original alias and find the logs, but I’ll avoid embarrassing myself .
I’d used Linux, via Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, etc, for years, with Windows on the side, but never particularly partaking in the Linux community itself.

Around 2019, I got into making snaps, after struggling to play the same video game that originally resulted in me using Ubuntu in 2006, and from there …
Contributions
Primarily I publish a small but sweet collection of snaps myself, and beyond that, advocate and help out when I can, which made me the second Star Developer to exist once that initiative starter (Lucy beat me to the finish line!) For example, my most popular two snaps would be Pinta and Joplin, which are free tools where I’d like to believe the snaps themselves have played a large if somewhat silent part in their growing popularity. For both of these, I hang around in their communities, looking for bugs I might be causing, helping support, or make patches from time to time.
Looking for something a bit more wild? I snapped ROOT for cern, and of course, made sure to brag about it so it’s used! https://root.cern/blog/snap-announcement - for what it’s worth, I failed Physics in school.
Beyond that, I’ve helped send patches to KeepassXC for their snap, helped give ideas for Thunderbird, and generally, I’ve helped out a bit.
Where next?
I’m not actually sure. However, I actually build most snaps in WSL2, and don’t directly use Linux bare metal much anymore. I’ve recently swapped to an Intel B580 conveniently after prior Wayland experiences were not amazing, and I’m very tempted by the idea of trying again for Ubuntu 26.04, alternatively, I’ve still a Steam Deck meaning I run Arch btw . From there, I’d hope being more directly exposed will give motivation to do more or learn more.
Still, for sure there’ll be more of the same, I haven’t added a new snap to the list in the while, but I’ve got one in mind that’s new versus what I’ve been doing so far. I’m recently gaining some enthusiasm back for technology, and I’m wondering myself where it might go.
But relating to community, I’m considering showing up for some of the Snapcraft fortnightly meetings, as weirdly after six years, I’ve never actually said hi in person (remotely!), being somewhat shy for someone who talks a lot.
But apparently, I will be there to say hi properly at the Ubuntu Summit, where I’m hoping to help out on, you guessed it, snaps!
