Issues Booting Ubuntu With Kernel 6.14.0-28-generic

Had issues this morning after booting into Windows11 then back to Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS. Both wired network cards, wifi card and additional displays (Nvidia) were not working. Thought W11 was the reason (as always :-)… fast boot, power options, TPM, clock difference, etc…) but that did not resolve the issues. Booting from Ubuntu USB sticks had all these things working (so not a hardware issue). Booting using older Kernel 6.14.0-27-generic from boot menu has everything working again. Checked update history and turns out I updated to 6.14.0-28-generic on 8/19 and didn’t reboot until this morning (8/20) annoyingly after booting to W11 first. Not sure how to proceed. 1)Wait 2)try to update again from -27 to -28 or 3) boot from 6-28 and try to fix (very difficult cause I don’t have internet access to update any packages).

One of my attempts was to reinstall the realtek drivers, which prompted ubuntu to remove some “unused” packages as shown in log above… AFAIK:
sudo apt install r8125-dkms

Is my understanding of this correct: “when the packages were removed while booted in 6-28, they were not removed from the previous kernel 6-27”?

I also checked Additional Drivers current status and it set to X.Org X server (no Nvidia is selected). Honestly, I am not sure if I ever enabled the Nvidia drivers in earlier Kernels.

Thanks. Looks like this happened because the linux headers packages for 6.14.0-28-generic kernel were not installed at the time the kernel was updated to 6.14.0-28-generic. Could you please post the output of these commands to see whether all required packages for 6.14.0-28-generic kernel have been installed since:

dpkg-query -W | grep -F linux
dpkg-query -l | grep -P -v '^[hi]i '

Your attempts to resolve the issue yourself got most of the needed packages installed, except for one:

This removed package is likely necessary for your additional displays to work with the 6.14.0-28-generic kernel. I believe the preferred way to reinstall it is by re-selecting the correct driver in Additional Drivers.

After that’s sorted, try booting into the 6.14.0-28-generic kernel again and see how much of the issues are now resolved?

Thank you for the update. I took the plunge and ran:
sudo ubuntu-drivers install
Rebooted in -28 and now working fine (including all 3 network cards and BT)

Btw, it installed the 575 version (first option in additional drivers), now shown as selected.

Just want to +1 this issue. Last night, I booted for the first time into 6.14.0-28. Broke in the exact same way the OP described. Using the Noveau NVIDIA driver. I’ll come back to this tonight after work and confirm to see if the solution worked for me. Right now just booting into 27 w/o issue.

Got the exact same problem as well. Could not for the life of me figure out what the issue was and only got my wired connection when I loaded “Ubuntu, with Linux 6.14.0-27-generic” instead.

I’m not a super user nor am I Linux/Ubuntu-savvy so I’m glad at least one other person got the same error.

I’m having the same problem here. I have Ubuntu running on an Alienware laptop. I got the update to kernel 6.14.0-28 but didn’t realize it until I saw the “restart required” icon in the upper right corner. Once I restarted my display didn’t work, screen was just blank. When I forced a reboot back into 6.14.0-27, then the display works, but I’m getting the apt warning about the missing .ko files. Any apt install is failing because of this.
I can provide logs if it would help.

I’ve encountered the same problem and reported the bug here Bug #2121046 “6.14.0-28-generic kernel update broke network and ...” : Bugs : linux-hwe-6.14 package : Ubuntu
In my case performing manual apt upgrade again in -27 kernel fixed the issue.
