I have just installed Kubuntu 24.10 but now realise I should have installed Ubuntu Studio

Ubuntu Version:

Kubuntu 24.10

Desktop Environment (if applicable):

KDE Plasma

Problem Description:

I have just moved to the Ubuntu family after more than a decade with OpenSuse. One reason for this is that I need a studio version of Linux for music production.

Unfortunately, I already installed Kubuntu before realising that Ubuntu Studio has moved to KDE Plasma as its desktop.

So my question is: Would it be better to do a fresh install of Ubuntu Studio, or add the +kxstudio repositories?

Thanks in advance for any advice or comments.

What I’ve Tried:

I don’t know enough about the differences in configuration of what is installed, but you can add Ubuntu Studio to any Ubuntu flavor.

Refer Ubuntu Studio Installer – Ubuntu Studio

A comparison of the manifest files; or what’s on an ISO may show differences in packages; as the difference between any Ubuntu system inc. flavors, is really just what is installed by default, but at heart all Ubuntu flavors are just Ubuntu anyway. Ubuntu Studio only uses Ubuntu repositories, as does Ubuntu and all flavors. KXStudio you mention however is something different, and not a Ubuntu system

Welcome to Ubuntu Discourse

I would wait for @eeickmeyer to comment about this. He is the Ubuntu Studio project leader and can probably give the best advice for your situation.

Nah, don’t wait for me. @guiverc is correct.

Theoretically, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can install ubuntustudio-desktop on a Kubuntu system and it should completely convert it. I’ve only ever done it once on 22.04, so no guarantees it will actually work.

Thanks to all for the advice. Normally I am pretty adventurous but am feeling a bit overwhelmed atm :upside_down_face: - although I must say, the change so far has been a lot easier than I expected.

I’ll wait until my day off, try Ubuntu Studio Installer, then I can always do a clean install if there are problems.

What do you need from Ubuntu Studio? You can just install what you need from the Ubuntu repos into Kubuntu. No problem.

It’s not that simple.

Ubuntu Studio is not simply a collection of packages on top of Ubuntu. It has a lot of configuration to optimize audio workflows.

If the user wants Ubuntu Studio, please do not discourage that. A solution was found, so comments like yours are not helpful.

4 posts were split to a new topic: Do you have links to the Ubuntu Studio optimisations?

Sorry this has been a bit delayed but the Ubuntu Studio Installer procedure left me with the “Failed to connect to audio engine” problem, documented here and elsewhere.

After spending some time reading the various posts and possible solutions, I decided a clean install of Ubuntu Studio would be simpler and more reliable.

I have now been using Ubuntu Studio for more than a week and so far, Ardour, Audacity, OBS Studio etc are working well.
