2. Install Docker

Docker is one of easiest ways to deploy and run ONLYOFFICE DocSpace. If you don’t have Docker installed on your Ubuntu machine, you can take a look at this guide in the Ubuntu Community Hub. Follow the instructions and make sure your Docker instance is running correctly.

To install ONLYOFFICE DocSpace, you need to have root rights. You can use the su – command to log into as a root user. In the terminal, run the command below to download the required script file:

When the script file is downloaded, you can proceed with installing and running ONLYOFFICE DocSpace as a Docker container. For this purpose, run this command in the terminal:

bash docspace-install.sh docker

Now you need to be patient as the installation and configuration process might take some time depending on your Internet connection. When the installation is over, you will see the following message:

Congratulations! You have successfully installed ONLYOFFICE DocSpace through Docker and the only thing you need to do before start collaborating on documents in real time is to register your DocSpace instance.

4. Register your ONLYOFFICE DocSpaceinstance

After installation, open any web browser and enter the IP address of your computer in the local network. After that, you will see the DocSpace setup page where you will need to specify some information to register your DocSpace:

  • Email address;
  • Password (your password must contain at least 8 characters but no more than 30).

You can also choose any of the available languages and establish the preferred time zone. Don’t forget to tick the corresponding box to accept the License agreement terms. When done, click Continue to finish the registration process and access your DocSpace.

5. Get started with your ONLYOFFICE DocSpace platform

After successful registration, you will be redirected to your DocSpace. To start collaborative work, you need to create your first room. To do so, click the + icon and choose the room type you need.

A collaboration room is a place where you can collaborate on documents, sheets, slides and forms with other users. A custom room can used for any purpose. For example, it can be used as a place where you can keep some important documents, related to a certain project or task.

When your first room is ready, you can create new documents or upload the existing ones from your hard disc as well as invite others for collaboration. There is an option allowing you to add new users manually from the list of active users. If there are no users, you can invite somebody by sending them a link. When inviting others, you can set up the required access level for them making sure they can only access what you want them to.

As the DocSpace owner, you can also have full access to the settings page, assign new admins and power users and grant other permission roles. You can also set up the configuration of the platform. For example, you can change the appearance of your platform, apply branding settings, enable additional protection options, configure back ups and even integrate some third-party services.
