Help with printer drivers

I could not find a .ppd file for Brother MFC-J497DW on Brother website. The Brother driver installation worked, though it is very complex and not even easy to read on their website. I don’t understand why this printer installs by itself on Ubuntu and is a huge issue on Lubuntu.

It’s usually just a deb and it installs the drivers for you

That?

It’s called the Driver Install Tool and the instructions on the Brother website are not very clear and can’t be cut and pasted into the terminal. However, when you get all the . in the right place, it installs a driver very nicely, for either a USB or WiFi connection.

Therefore…problem resolved now?

The printer in question, the Brother MFC-J497DW is a driverless IPP printer. It should just work with Ubuntu, no drivers are required, neither for printing nor for scanning. Please uninstall all packages which you have downloaded from Brother and remove the print queue(s) created with them.

The printer should appear automatically in the print dialogs of the applications.

See the list of driverless printers at OpenPrinting.
