Hello

I just got into Ubuntu, as I was using a Ubuntu VM for compiling source, now I’m going on to upgrading a VM from 4.10 to 25.10, and currently on 12.10!

Welcome to the Ubuntu community! :waving_hand:
That’s quite a journey — upgrading a VM all the way from 4.10 to 25.10 is impressive. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

It’s great to hear that you started with Ubuntu for compiling source and are now diving deeper into the ecosystem. Good luck with the rest of the upgrade process, and feel free to ask if you run into any issues along the way.

Enjoy exploring Ubuntu!

My laptop has 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, but I suppose I can just cut back on Snaps once I hit the relevant version, and the method I’m using (alternate ISOs pre 12.10, Update Manager after that) just asks me if I want to clean old packages, and I can still allocate 4GB RAM at the end

Welcome to this great community, hope you have an awesome time here.

That’s a heck of a process! What made you decide to go through all the upgrades instead of replacing it with a fresh installation?

If you’re unaware of the differences between the LTS (long-term support) and non-LTS versions, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with them. LTS versions require far fewer major upgrades, and they allow a feature (Pro) that the non-LTS versions don’t.
