Hello Hello

Hi, my name is Ricky. I’ve been using computers for many years. My first computer was a Pentium and before that I was working with 486s. Windows was the first OS I used starting with Win 95 and I’ve probably used every version after that. I still remember the nightmare that was Windows ME LOL. Due to my job I work with Windows every day. Since my first computer I have owned Macs and used MacOS as well. I’m very versed in both of those OSes.
More than a decade ago I also started using Linux as well. My first distro was Linux Mint and since then I have also used Kali and Ubuntu. I have typically used Linux partially simply because my job requires me to use Windows and my daily driver was on MacOS. There is only so much computing that I needed to do each day. I always wanted to do more on Linux but the opportunity just wasn’t there. I still liked using it and becoming more familiar with it though. In the past two years I have finally been able to use Linux a lot more. I’m delving into two of my passions, coding and network security. I’ve got a laptop that dual boots Linux Mint and Kali. Just two weeks ago I set up a desktop with the lastest version of Ubuntu.
I’m actually here because I’ve been having issues with my Ubuntu desktop. I’m looking for resources where I can search for answers and ask questions. I’m not too knowledgeable about Linux yet but if I can also help others I for sure will jump in where I can. The plan for my Ubuntu desktop is to make it into a media server.

Welcome Ricky - we’re glad to have you here

I use an old PC with Ubuntu as a media server, works brilliantly.

Oh yeah man, I should have mentioned.

My main Ubuntu usage is as a Media Server, so if you have any questions about Plex or JellyFin, just ask.

I may not know the answers, but I will do what I can.

Thanks everyone. I lost wifi over the weekend so I wasn’t able to connect to the site. I’ve got so much planned for the next couple of days. I have it all mapped out though, I’m so pumped to get it all started. I’m going to be using Tailscale and hosting a Rustdesk server to get remote access going on my Ubuntu desktop and my Linux Mint laptop. I’m going to start setting up the media server bits on the Ubuntu machine as well. I’m sure I will have a lot of questions but hopefully I’ll be able to start answering some questions too.

I also setup Batocera on a USB stick so I’m having fun playing around with that as well. I know emulation is always a tricky subject so I’m not sure how it is looked on here. Personally I’m playing around with the interface and learning how to backup the games I have. I have ALOT! lol so the thought of being able to play them easily without digging out my original XBOX from my storage closet appeals to me. However I do understand that it might be a touchy subject and if that is the case I will not mention it again.
