HDMI sound suddenly stopped working, but the sound settings window indicates otherwise

A few days ago, after rebooting my system (ubuntu 22.04) the audio from one of the HDMI ports started malfunctioning, playing intermittently with silences (not a single word was fully audible). Additionally, videos were playing in a glitchy manner.

After restarting the system, updating, and reinstalling video (nvidia) and audio drivers with no improvement, I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04. Following the upgrade, videos began to play correctly, but there was no audio at all (sometimes there’s an initial sound, but then it goes silent).

The monitor’s audio and the cable are working properly, as I verified with another device. However, I’ve tried every solution I could find online without success.

One important thing is that when playing music or a video, the small orange bar at the top of the Sound configuration window shows some movement, as if actual audio is being played.

But when using the Test Speakers options at the right of the Output Device, clicking on the Left or Right speaker do not only results in silence, but the orange bar do not appears: is an small gray bar, indicating silence (not sure if this is normal behaviour).

Currently, I’m using an external Bluetooth speaker, but I’d like to return to the original setup.
