HDMI and NVIDIA Sound Issues on Ubuntu

(sorry, didn’t know topics close after a month, also see the other topic to which my topic/post is a reply)

I’m thinking of buying this cheap video card too. Processors nowadays appear to not have a GPU built in anymore and I don’t use Linux for gaming. So I’ve no use for a power hungry modern vid. crd.

However, I too use my Linux PC as a Media Center (with Kodi). And I too need to pass (digital) audio through HDMI to my receiver.

Maybe the problem is Alsa, the sound driver. That also works with a kernel module.

And I haven’t installed a video driver on Linux for ages. But doesn’t Ubuntu have a “special” config window for the non-open source proprietary Nvidia drivers? Or can you install from the standard repository/restricted repository a driver like “xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-390”? Have you tried that?

Welcome to Ubuntu Discourse

I have moved your post to its own thread so we can offer better support.

Thanks.

Ubuntu does indeed have an additional drivers option but, despite recommending an older Nvidia driver for these cards, the drivers do not work and the whole Ubuntu desktop does not work with these cards, requiring you to uninstall them from the command line to get the desktop working again.

The nouveau driver displays OK but no sound over HDMI.

I have now reported this as a bug and need to submit some dmesg logs for a kind helper to investigate. Hoping to do this in the next couple of days.
