Guess the release: 25.10 - Q

Hi everyone,

As the Plucky Puffin is about to be released into the wild, we’d like to introduce a new and fun community activity: :crystal_ball:Guess the Release! :crystal_ball:

What is a release mascot?

More than 20 years ago, the very first release of Ubuntu was the Warty Warthog. That’s how the cycle of Ubuntu mascots began! Since then, moving in alphabetical order, we’ve had a mascot for each and every Ubuntu release.

But how?

By now, some of you might be asking yourselves, “But how?” Are the releases magically created by AI? We’re not going to spoil the secret recipe behind the birth of a mascot, but believe it or not, humans—not machines—are behind it! :brain:

Sounds fun? Let’s have some fun together!

If you’ve been around the orange side of Linux, you know that people in the community have their favorite release mascots. They become attached to certain ones and might even spend a considerable amount of time playing games against their friends, guessing what the new release mascot will be. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do with you!

Yes, starting now, this is an official activity of the Ubuntu community! :drum::drum::drum:

Where are the rules?

  • :boar: Guess the next mascot codename. Add your best guess as a reply to this thread. This includes both an adjective and an animal (or perhaps mythical creature?) that starts with the letter of the next release of Ubuntu: Q
  • :one: One suggestion for each person will be taken into consideration. So, please submit your best idea!
  • :hourglass:The first one to post a winning suggestion, will get a special badge on the Ubuntu Discourse.
  • :stop_sign: A maximum of three badges will be awarded to individuals who guess: only the adjective, only the animal, both adjective and animal.
  • :name_badge: Secret and special badges might be awarded for particularly creative or fun ideas :zipper_mouth_face::ninja:.

When do we do this?

The activity starts now, 1st April 2025, and it will end when the codename of the next Ubuntu release is publicly announced.

Special thanks

:mega: Special thanks to @mclemenceau for this super fun idea, and @aaronprisk for the artwork!

There’s only a few animals with a common name that starts with Q, Quetzal is already used, and the Quagga is extinct, so…

Quiescent Quokka, perhaps?

Quintessential has a lot of room for misspellings in changelog entries, but seems pretty apt

Quality Quail is definitely too basic… oh, I know! Quantal Quetzal! Perfect! :tada:

Oh, wait, we did that one already.

My firm guess for right now is going to be Quaint Quokka.

And an honorable but silly mention: Quick Quigley.

Please don’t make me write quintessential over and over again :frowning:

Querulous? No, I don’t think I want an OS that feels wronged. Quick? Nice, but a bit simplistic given our adjectival history. Questing? Oooh, tempting, but I think I’ll go with…

Quizzical Quelea

Quantum Quokka has my preference because first Quokka are ridiculously cute  and given how trendy Quantum Computing is, it should automatically boost every post about Ubuntu 25.10

I would like a Quadratic Quoll

I’m going to love typing Quizzical almost more than I enjoy typing Quiescent. :stuck_out_tongue:

I really like this suggestion though.

I’ll voice support for a Queer Quickhatch, also known as a wolverine, a distant relative of weasels, badgers and otters, with pretty interesting names in different languages.

I’m keeping with the recent bird theme and going with Quantum Quail!

Quaint Quagga <more characters to research 20 char minimum>

My guess is: Quaint Quoll.

It sends to be a tongue twister…
