Fix graphics desktop GUI of local machine from live USB boot when recovery mode fails

Fix graphics desktop GUI of local machine from live USB boot when recovery mode fails. How do I do this? I believe a proprietry driver has broken my ubuntu upgrade. I need to fix the desktop environment but recovery mode also glitches with graphics issues.

Welcome to Ubuntu Discourse

Please provide us with more details.

  • Ubuntu version and kernel (if known)
  • Desktop environment
  • Hardware such as RAM and especially graphics card/s
  • Were you updating from one version to the next, if so from what to what?
  • any error messages you can add would also be useful

Thanks.

24.04 to 24.10 lightdm and gdm3 32GB RAM, Nvidia RTX 4060

No error message just graphics glitches

Basically I just want to at least recover some bookmarks but ideally get the system working again

If you boot an older kernel do it help?

Make backups of important data, like bookmarks.

Yes should have but at the moment it just a test machine, I can try with older recovery kernel.

Doesnt work with either kernel, normal or recovery. Just graphics glitches

Also Im running the os off of a usb sata drive if that is of any help

Have you tried a different USB port, to test
