Extremely loud noise on start of audio - Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Ubuntu Version:
Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
GNOME

Problem Description:

  • At the start of audio, there sometimes is an extremely loud (white) noise for 1-2 seconds that startles me. After that the noise stays away for some time (can be hours). The problem started occurring since install of Ubuntu 24 I believe, but I am not sure.

  • The volume of the noise does not depend on the system volume.

  • I don’t know how to replicate the issue because I don’t know the exact conditions in which the issue occurs.

  • The issue occurs with sound from multiple sources (e.g. browser and system sounds).
But the issue doesn’t seem to occur with Spotify client, but I’m not sure.

Relevant System Information:
I am using audio through an M-Audio Fast Track USB device

What I’ve Tried:

  • check dmesg for errors → No errors

  • The FastTrack device has speaker output and headphone output → The issue occurs with both.

  • Disabling power save: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1420557/audio-output-annoying-noise-22-04
But the USB module does not have the power_save parameter. I tried setting the /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save to 0. → The issue still occurs.

  • Switching from analog to digital output device in Settings > Sound > Output. → The issue still occurs.

Have you tried disabling audio suspend following this method (PipeWire instructions)? If not, does this make less occurrences of the loud noise?
(To be clear, the solution in that article is not specific to System76 hardware.)

If possible, please test with a different audio output device, such as built-in speakers or a different audio interface.

@halogen2 I tried disabling audio suspend as you suggested and the issue has not occurred since. Thanks a lot for this solution, I’ll live a few years longer because of this!

@dchang0 This has also crossed my mind to further debug the problem. I’ll give this a try should the issue reoccur.
