Expanding the Xubuntu Community: Matrix & Discourse

The Xubuntu team has joined the other flavors in embracing Matrix and Discourse.

Matrix is a modern, open-source, decentralized communication platform similar to Telegram. Xubuntu now has a presence on the ubuntu.com homeserver and the Ubuntu Community space. We’re evaluating Matrix as an additional chat platform. For our long-time IRC family, don’t worry; Our primary space for communication and support is still IRC. Join the conversation on Matrix and help us make it successful!

Discourse is a modern, open-source forum system used by Ubuntu and its various flavors. Xubuntu was recently granted its topic for communication, which can be found here. We’ll utilize Discourse as another means to communicate announcements and discuss non-support-related topics. We’re new here, so help us make it great! If you want to reach the team or broader community, our main form of communication is still through the xubuntu-users and xubuntu-devel mailing lists.

There are now so many ways to join the conversation about Xubuntu, each with its own small community of fans and contributors!

Hi,

Great to see all official social profiles and related resources in one place.

From what I see:

  • The Facebook page? Last post there is 4 years old.
  • on X (formerly Twitter) there are no posts.
  • I didn’t know about Matrix and Mastodon, those are new to me, but I see they’re active.
  • And last but no least, I’ve read about an incident on Xubuntu.org website.

So, I would like to ask,

  • what’s the status of the Facebook page?
  • is anyone managing the X (Twitter) account?
  • Is the xubuntu.org site up to date?

I’m just asking to see if I can help in any way on those areas.

I work as an FM radio operator, but I also manage their Facebook page and a few of their Wordpress sites. I know nothing about php or any other web code language (I used to build HTML websites decades ago, but that’s all), but if the site is managed by a Wordpress system or any other CMS (content management system) I could check it from time to time to keep it up to date.

I know on Facebook a page admin can allow someone to become an editor, so they can publish news, articles and all that without compromising the page.

x (Twitter) is different, you’ve got to manage it yourself or give full access to someone else.

Facebook and x/Twitter would be like a blog, for publishing new releases and related news.

Please let me know if I can help, what are the requirements and all that. Either here or by private messages. I don’t have much time, but I can do stuff once or twice a week.

Thank you

Hello, and thanks for reaching out! To answer your questions directly:

what’s the status of the Facebook page?

While we still have a Facebook presence, it is not actively maintained. Our primary social media strategy is on Mastodon.

is anyone managing the X (Twitter) account?

We have decided to exit Twitter and move our social media to Mastodon. We made the announcement here: https://x.com/Xubuntu/status/1886754277177123276

And last but no least, I’ve read about an incident on Xubuntu.org website.

Is the xubuntu.org site up to date?

We’re eagerly awaiting the official communication from our hosting provider on this. We’ll share additional details once they’re available. For now, the download page has been taken offline. Official ISO downloads are still available from the Ubuntu servers:

…but if the site is managed by a Wordpress system or any other CMS (content management system) I could check it from time to time to keep it up to date.

We’re actively developing a static site on Hugo to replace our WordPress instance. We hope to launch it soon.

I’ll share this with our Facebook admin and they should be able to follow up or share the requirements to me.

Thank you for the kind message and offer to help out!
