Emojis are not rendering properly

Ubuntu Version: 24.10
Desktop Environment (if applicable): GNOME

Problem Description:
For the past couple of weeks, emojis have not been rendering properly. It’s like they’ve fallen back to barebones wireframe versions (see images). I don’t know if this is caused by an extension or if there’s an underlying image library, because I see the problem in three programs on my system.

Screenshots or Error Messages:

What I’ve Tried: Logging out and rebooting.

I think ‘a library of image/s’ needs to be added to the program.

It’s three different pieces of software, and they’ve all worked fine for years.

I’m guessing you’re basing this on some websites. I notice issues here, for example:

Note in that screenshot I’ve highlighted :sob: which renders :sob: appropriately at the bottom.

That has to be some issue with the website.

You might want to pick out a particular emoji that seems to not work and test it in many places. Like copy and paste it around. That will give you some clues.

No, the screenshots are from an app called Texts and from the Emoji Copy extension.

So is there anywhere they do work? Firefox, for example? Because if they work there, then they certainly do work.

It may be useful to know (if you don’t already) there are several ways to enter emoji.

Ah, great question! And look what I’ve found. This is the characters app:

What font are you using?

Please post the output from running this command in Terminal -

apt-cache policy fonts-noto-color-emoji

Ah, even before I do that, I know what the problem is. I removed the Noto font. I was fed up with having a hundred fonts I didn’t use in my LibreOffice dropdown menu.

The terminal says:

fonts-noto-color-emoji:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 2.047-1
Version table:
2.047-1 500
500 Index of /ubuntu oracular/main amd64 Packages
500 Index of /ubuntu oracular/main i386 Packages

So, I should just:

sudo apt install fonts-noto-color-emoji

and that will fix it?

Probably. Please try it and let us know :+1:
