Dual Boot Windows Ubuntu 24.04 on HP Laptop

I’m a relative novice on Ubuntu because things seem to just work. Yesterday I tried to setup my first dual boot system, with Windows 11 and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. While I can boot to either, it’s not working as expected. I suspect the issue has more to do with HP than Ubuntu.

In Bios Windows Boot Manager I can see both the Windows and Ubuntu, but I cannot select Ubuntu. What I discovered is I can hit F9 when booting and then select Ubuntu. It works, but is rather crude.

I’ve tried Boot-Repair without effect. KDE Partition manager does show the first disc (/boot/efi) as being selected for boot. Grub Customizer shows Ubuntu at the top. I’ve made no changes using either of those last two programs.

Anyway, the current setup does work, and makes having Ubuntu on the machine rather hidden, which is nice, but I’d rather have it boot with a choice given and Ubuntu being the default if no action is taken.

Machine is an HP 14-df0xxx with an i3-8130U processor.

You can set Ubuntu to be first choice via the UEFI (BIOS) settings.

Power on > Tap F10 > System Configuration > Boot Options > UEFI Boot Order > OS Boot Manager
F5 and F6 keys move the device up or down
F10 to save and exit

I was doing that, but it wasn’t saving/sticking. But because of your post I went back and changed the order and then hit F10 to save. That doesn’t exit the bios, but saves that one changed setting! Since it was basically the same message at the bottom for what F10 does, I hadn’t tried that.

So thank you for making me go back! I sort of knew it was HP related, and not Ubuntu.

Edit: To modify your post, the instructions would be:

You can set Ubuntu to be first choice via the UEFI (BIOS) settings. Power on > Tap F10 > System Configuration > Boot Options > UEFI Boot Order > OS Boot Manager F5 and F6 keys move the device up or down F10 to save, and then F10 to save and exit
