Desktop Sharing (RDP) does not work with built-in Windows client (mstsc)

Ubuntu Version:
Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS

Desktop Environment:
GNOME 46

Problem Description:
I activated the Desktop Sharing feature but I’m not able to connect using the built-in Windows client (mstsc). I always get the message “An authentication error has occurred. More data is available.”, which is pretty cryptic.
As a workaround, I’ve been using the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the Windows Store, but it will be discontinued on May 27th, so making sure the built-in client works is critical.

Relevant System Information:
I’m trying to connect from Windows 10, build 10.0.19045.5737.

What I’ve Tried:
I tried tweaking the settings, for example setting the screen resolution to match the remote one (1280x1024) and changing the bit depth from 32 bit to 24 bit, but I always get the same error.

Welcome rapperskull!

I just looked up mstsc and Remote Desktop App. Seems there is a replacement for Remote Desktop AppWindows App. Maybe this works for you.

Did I get it right that mstsc never connected to the Ubuntu client?

Hi g-schick.
Unfortunately, Windows App is only available for organizations with an active Microsoft 365 subscription, not private users.
Also, according to the table in this page, the new app doesn’t allow for connection to remote PCs from Windows, as Microsoft suggests using mstsc.

And yes, mstsc never worked on Ubuntu 24.04. It worked on 22.04 if I recall correctly, but I was using VNC at the time, so I’m not sure.

Is VNC an option? If so - does it work? Or does it need to be mstsc?

So all connection parameters in mstsc are correct (user, user domain, password, computer name, computer domain, …)? Did you try to connect via IP?

VNC was an option, but the built-in server got removed over security concern. The issue here is the GNOME built-in RDP server not working, not finding a workaround (probably a third party RDP server would work).

As for the parameters, everything should be correct. I’m not aware of any particular setting I need to set. As a matter of fact, the only settings I needed to tweak to make the Remote Desktop app work were those two options below, since the resolution is fixed.

Do you have Screen Lock enabled? I get this error if the screen is locked. Otherwise it works.

I tried disabling screen lock entirely, but nothing changes.
