cybrsaylr here.
Been a member of Ubuntu Forums and using Ubuntu since 2008. Recently installed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and can’t get into both the Help Forums and Discourse Forums. Ubuntu won’t let me sign in. I did get into and used both forums with Ubuntu 22.04 that I use right now to post this. Ubuntu 22.04 lets me in but not Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. This is my first time using Discourse. Hope I can get help getting back into these forums when using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
How are you trying to sign in? Are you using a password manager?
When sign-in does not work in 24.04, what does happen instead?
Am just signing in normal using 22.04 right now but when trying to sign in with 24.04 I now just keep getting messages, sign in is being refused due to, too many sign in attempts.
Also my handle has always been cybrsaylr since 2008 but in Discourse here it seems I am logged in as auto132956 instead! Very confusing.
I put in my email that has been used here forever and Ubuntu just kicks it out.
It seems Discourse has given me a new handle, auto132956
I find no record of a user “cybrsaylr” in Ubuntu Discourse.
The title seems confusing, as you clearly are able to login to Ubuntu Discourse.
Your Forums profile does not transfer to Ubuntu Discourse. Two separate platforms, two separate logins.
Are you asking for us to change your Ubuntu Discourse username to cybrsaylr? Or are you asking something else?
As you know from years of experience in UbuntuForums, we can help best if your description of the problem is clear and accurate. We do want to help.

cybrsaylr has been my user name since 2008 in Ubuntu forums and would like it to remain.
Don’t know why it was changed to auto132956 in Ubuntu Discourse.
Runninng Ubuntu 22.04 I can get into both Ubuntu Forums and Discourse to post this but can’t get into Discourse running 24.04.
Jeremy31 did send me an email to me using my email on record instructing me what to do that may help but here but I could not reply to it. Tried doing what Jeremy31 said to no avail. 24.04 still won’t let me into Discourse. So have to use 22.04 to post this.
22.04 accepts my email and password on record and lets me in, while 24.04 refuses that same email and password to sign in here.
It never was on Discourse. Others can comment about the transition from Forums to Discourse. I would expect it to just migrate but maybe not.
Anyways, would you like it changed now?
This makes no sense, really. Assuming you’re on the Firefox Snap, you probably use the same version in both places. If you manually enter in the username and password (no password managers or autofill from the browser whether from a plugin or otherwise) you still have problems? What is the exact message? Screenshot maybe?
wxl,
cybrsaylr did not migrate to Discourse in the transition.
Don’t know why cybrsaylr was changed to auto132956 in Discourse.
I’ve always used Opera browser to sign into Ubuntu Forums and now Discourse.
This works on 22.04 but not on 24.04 when done manually on both.
22.04 lets me log into Discourse.
Here’s the screenshot when running 24.04 that refuses any login:
Recieved no emails to my above account to verify.
Be sure to check the spam folder
That’s what I’m saying: it didn’t. Your username on the account you’re on now was always auto132956 since its creation.
Reading above:
it seems my idea that usernames would be migrated from Forums to Discourse is unfounded.
My guess is your Launchpad is here. Since your username there is auto132956, that’s probably why you ended up with it here.
So I’ll ask for the final time: would you like your username on Discourse changed from auto132956 to cybrsaylr?
If you’re using the Snap, the logic I provided above applies. More explicitly:
- You’re logging into a website
- In order to access the website, you use a browser
- If the browser used is the same one and the same version, there should be no difference in the two experiences
There are other possible explanations but not many I can think of:
- different cookies (clear the cache and try again)
- other networking issues (this is really unlikely since you can visit the website)
Ultimately, this is not Discourse you’re logging into. You’re logging into the Ubuntu One SSO which is used to log into Discourse. You also use that to log into nearly every other Ubuntu service, including Launchpad. The issue isn’t that there’s a problem with the SSO passing your credentials to Discourse. It’s that you can’t log into the SSO at all. This means you shouldn’t be able to use any other Ubuntu One-powered services. The fact that you can log in on another machine suggests there is no problem with your Ubuntu One account.
Jeremy31,
I checked spam folder and nothing there.
Yes, prefer using cybrsaylr, as in the past.
Tried using Firefox and get the same refusal message as in screenshot posted above.
Have to run 22.04 to reply here.
Glad to see cybrsaylr username again!
Thanks.
Running 22.04 now and hope when going back to 24.04 I can get back into Discourse.
Username changed.
If the link I gave about to your Launchpad was correct, this is the problem. That username is used for all sorts of things. You should consider changing that username to cybrsaylr. You can do that at this link (if you’re logged in to the SSO, which will require the other machine it seems). However, this can cause problems with other sites you’ve logged into (including potentially here), as seen here.
What’s interesting about that is that you’re not seeing the usual error when you get your password wrong:
I did numerous login attempts with incorrect credentials even with a valid username and was never directed to the forgot password page you showed. Are you sure there isn’t some initial error? I will point out on the example above that above the password, it shows an error. That suggests that you go to the page you ended up on, but doesn’t take you there. So maybe the reason you ended up there is because you saw a similar error message? But which one?
And did you try clearing the cache as I suggested?
What’s interesting about that is that you’re not seeing the usual error when you get your password wrong:
It appears my email always used in the past is being blocked now on 24.04 but it works fine running 22.04… which I am back on.
Did clear Opera cache but that didn’t help.
Also tried getting into Discourse using Firefox, Brave and Vivaldi browsers with no luck when running 24.04. All 3 of them give the same message as shown in the screenshot above when attempting sign in with SSO, and have never tried using them for Ubuntu Forums etc, in the past.
No, that’s not it. You’re having some sort of problem, but it’s not clear what. However, like I said, it’s with SSO. Here’s the help page with regards to the exact problem you’re having, with a link to contact folks for support should it persist.
Went to SSO. Here’s the help page
Tried to change my password to see if that may help.
And ran into another problem. Now that personal ID details page says my original password that I’ve used forever and still works now, is WRONG and won’t let me change anything!!!
I’m logged in 20.04 and everything works fine but now can’t change things because it says my password is wrong!
Like I said, SSO issue. If you followed that help page through to the contacts you would eventually find isd-support@canonical.com. Please contact them for help with this.
Tried that and so far got nowhere.
Perhaps would I have better luck just creating a new account to get back into Discourse running 24.04?
Right now running 22.04, as it’s the only way I can post this.
That is the only way to fix that problem. I am not sure you can create a new account unless you create a new Launchpad account. Even then, I’m not sure it will fix your issue.
wxl
Thanks for the help.
Did not know going to Discourse would result in a new username/account being created.
Was hoping my cybrsaylr account would migrate to Discourse, fully retaining all its posts and history, keeping things neat and tidy and easy to go back and check. Thought this would have been easier than having now 2 Ubuntu accounts.
