This article is the first in a series about Canonical’s new design system.

TL;DR

After a decade using the CSS library Vanilla Framework, we saw that visual consistency works well but leaves gaps in shared meaning as things scale. An ontology – identifying and defining UI elements, their relationships, and rules – helps bridge this by establishing a shared engineering and design language for clearer team coordination, less technical debt, and more reliable interfaces that look, act, and mean the same. The article covers our starting approach to ontology development and practical team operations, like weekly fact production discussions to materialize a knowledge graph. This knowledge graph structures documentation while unlocking semantically explainable inference for detecting anti-patterns, generating specs, and ensuring quality at enterprise scale.

In 2024, Canonical marked ten years of our open-source CSS library, the Vanilla Framework. The framework had served the organization well, coordinating visual presentation across over one hundred projects - from ubuntu.com to internal applications. This anniversary naturally invited us to reflect: what abstractions and what solutions would the next decade require?

Under leadership impulse, two design system teams were created to explore this question - one within design led by Diana Stanciulescu, another in web engineering led by myself. Our mandate: identify what needs solving to sustain quality and consistency as the demand for design system abstractions and implementations grows.

The Vanilla Framework had emerged in 2014 with a specific mandate: create an enterprise-grade alternative to Bootstrap - the single prevalent design system at the time - to serve Canonical’s expanding product portfolio. The architecture employed SASS variables and mixins following established patterns of that period, creating systematic abstractions that enabled teams to manage complexity at scale while maintaining sophisticated configurability and theming capabilities.

This period coincided with broader methodological shifts in web design. Atomic design principles, popularized by Brad Frost, provided systematic approaches to component composition through hierarchical organization - atoms, molecules, organisms, templates, and pages. These concepts represented domain-driven design applied to web interfaces, naturally enabled by the tree-like structure of HTML nodes. Vanilla’s architecture reflected these contemporary patterns while adapting them to Canonical’s specific requirements.

After ten years, Vanilla achieved measurable adoption across the organization, coordinating visual presentation across diverse contexts: from canonical.com and ubuntu.com websites, through package marketplaces like snapcraft.io and charmhub.io, to numerous enterprise applications both public and internal. Occasional discoveries of applications built with Vanilla by teams outside the web team’s awareness reveal organic adoption beyond centralized oversight. Today more than fifty projects still use Vanilla in production - more than 95% of our applications and sites, showing the value of the visual coordination that the Vanilla framework provides.

Yet, discussions shared around Vanilla’s anniversary date revealed something unexpected. Despite our ability to specify padding values or colors precisely, we struggled to define basic categories. What distinguishes a component from a pattern? When should we stop adding features to a component, instead splitting it into two ? How should we capture the practice of using links for navigation while buttons are reserved to trigger actions ?

When asked to define “component,” one person emphasized reusable behavior, another described code implementation, and another questioned composition rules. After ten years, design system practitioners approached identical terminology from fundamentally different angles, revealing partial knowledge overlaps rather than true shared understanding. Each team’s documentation reflected implicit categorical assumptions without making those assumptions explicit, and agreement that buttons are components failed to resolve whether forms are components or patterns, whether accordion items are subcomponents, or whether the grid needs its own category.

The success in visual coordination had illuminated boundaries that would become significant constraints: teams can agree on visual features but disagree on their meaning - how the purpose of our UI elements and their categories should be encoded in our design and engineering practices. Teams implement visually identical navigation patterns while creating substantially different interaction behaviors. The implicit semantic agreements that enable visual consistency function effectively at smaller scales but show strain as portfolio complexity increases, with each new application or team adding to the accumulated ambiguity. While teams can coordinate appearance through shared visual specifications, they lack mechanisms for ensuring consistent behavior or utilization, resulting in component reuse that succeeded visually while diverging functionally.

The pattern made sense retrospectively. Design systems begin with visual consistency because it’s immediately visible. Semantic questions - for instance whether chips and badges should be merged as the same component - emerge later, when scale requires shared understanding beyond appearance. Vanilla’s documentation reflected this evolution: detailed visual specifications but no definitions for categories themselves. This divergence pattern followed predictable trajectories. Visual abstractions enabled consistent appearance without mechanisms for ensuring consistent behavior or utilization: component reuse succeeded visually while diverging functionally.

The framework had solved the tractable problem of visual coordination while the intractable problem of semantic coordination remained unaddressed. As these coordination challenges accumulated, the fundamental distinction between styling library and design system became increasingly apparent. This gap between visual coordination and semantic understanding became our starting point. Not as a failure to correct but as a natural boundary to cross - the difference between making things look consistent and making them mean consistently. Where styling libraries coordinate appearance, design systems must coordinate both appearance and meaning to function effectively at scale.

Adaptation patterns and complexity accumulation

Organizations develop compensatory mechanisms when fundamental coordination tools are absent. Our teams adapted to missing semantic structure through elaborate visual description protocols. A typical requirement translation demonstrates the pattern:

A developer requests “We need a table for our app. But not the one that is used on sites. One that has filtering capabilities and pagination, more like the workplace engineering one with the sparklines but without the double rows mechanism.”

This exchange reveals how visual description becomes organizational communication protocol when semantic vocabulary is unavailable. Without shared semantic definitions, teams resort to visual references that require multiple translation steps. Each translation introduces potential misalignment between intent and implementation. The overhead compounds with organizational scale - what begins as minor friction in small teams becomes information loss and coordination failure as organizations grow. Teams normalize this friction through repetition, accepting translation overhead as inherent rather than recognizing it as a symptom of missing semantic conventions and infrastructure.

The absence of semantic vocabulary manifests in accumulation of technical debt through specific, observable patterns. We noticed subtle functional differences across navigation components across our applications. The authentication flow is implemented with slightly different interface variations and features across our applications. Keyboard navigation is inconsistent across implementations sharing visual specifications. While each implementation decision can be justified within its local context, the collective result creates unnecessary complexity and maintenance burden.

Component semantic overloading occurred systematically. Consider chip components: teams employ them to filter results in some contexts, label items in others, and combine both functions elsewhere. This raises fundamental questions - which function takes precedence when both exist? Can a chip contain a button, or should the entire chip be clickable? These questions matter because inconsistent answers create user confusion and implementation complexity. The visual similarity masks fundamental usage differences: without semantic distinction mechanisms, teams lack vocabulary to articulate these differences precisely.

This pattern extends beyond our specific context into broader industry practice. Contemporary frameworks including Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap, and similar systems organize around utility-first approaches - where classes directly specify visual properties like colors and spacing rather than semantic purpose. These approaches excel at rapid prototyping and visual consistency but may inadvertently discourage semantic thinking by focusing developer attention on appearance rather than meaning. The prevalence of these patterns normalizes visual-first thinking across the industry, making semantic gaps less visible even as they accumulate technical debt.

Linguistic principles and structural mapping

The recognition that semantic coordination requires systematic vocabulary led naturally to examining how other domains manage comparable complexity. Natural language provides the most sophisticated example of coordinating meaning at scale, suggesting that linguistic principles might offer applicable patterns for interface design.

Natural language coordinates meaning through specific mechanisms. Dictionaries establish not merely definitions but relationships through etymology and cross-reference. Grammar provides combination rules that constrain valid expressions, creating systems capable of infinite expression while maintaining comprehensibility. Interface design faces analogous coordination challenges, suggesting that linguistic principles offer proven solution patterns rather than convenient metaphors.

Two references proved particularly valuable in structuring our approach. In their influential 2015 blog post for the UK Government Digital Service (GDS), “Good services are verbs, bad services are nouns”, Lou Downe tackled a core challenge in public administration: inconsistent, jargon-laden naming of services across departments. Downe explained that noun-based names reflecting internal processes - like “Immigration Health Surcharge” or “Statutory Off Road Vehicle Notification (SORN)” - force users to learn government terminology or cause confusion through overlapping usage. Downe demonstrated that verb-based organization focusing on user needs, such as “check if you need to pay towards your healthcare in the UK,” creates clearer coordination than noun-centric approaches that prioritize system structure. This method, elaborated in Downe’s 2020 book Good Services: How to Design Services That Work, compels research-driven naming that emphasizes user intent over organizational silos.

Our second reference draws from language pedagogy. Takahide Ezoe, founder of Shinjuku Japanese Language Institute, developed the “Ezoe Method” in the 1970s for teaching Japanese to non-native speakers without translation intermediaries. Tackling the challenge of conveying complex grammar directly, Ezoe’s approach employs visual tools like colored, stacked cards that spatially mirror sentence structures, aligning with learners’ cognitive patterns (examples : here and here). This structural mirroring reduces learning overhead by enabling intuitive grasp over memorization. These examples provide concrete evidence that linguistic organization enhances comprehension and coordination effectiveness.

The mapping between linguistic categories and interface elements emerged through systematic analysis rather than arbitrary assignment. Components correspond to nouns as tangible interface objects. Interactions map to verbs as actions bringing interfaces to life. States and modifiers function as adjectives describing variations and conditions. This correspondence reflects structural similarity rather than superficial analogy - both domains organize meaning through relationship patterns.

The principle of mirroring user vocabulary rather than creating technical language emerged from usage analysis. When users say “click the submit button,” they demonstrate existing semantic structure that interfaces can embrace rather than abstract. Ezoe’s work revealed that when modeling aligns with mental models, complexity becomes manageable through structural rather than mnemonic learning. This suggests design systems should adopt user semantic patterns rather than impose technical ones.

Compositional constraints in language parallel interface constraints systematically. As languages prevent double pluralization through grammatical rules, interfaces prevent mutually exclusive states through logical rules - a message cannot simultaneously represent error and success states. Language evolution patterns - how new words enter vocabularies, how deprecated terms gradually fade from use, how meanings shift over generations - provide governance frameworks for design system evolution. These evolutionary patterns suggest systematic approaches for introducing new components, deprecating outdated patterns, and managing semantic drift over time.

The concept of negative knowledge space - what is explicitly not part of the language - shapes cognitive patterns as powerfully as positive vocabulary. This principle manifests the concept of linguistic relativity, sometimes known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, in technical domains: available vocabulary influences possible thoughts. Deliberately removing utility-focused vocabulary becomes both tool and goal. Encouraging teams to conceptualize a “danger button” rather than a “red button” operates this cognitive shift - the button appears red because it signifies danger, not the reverse. This principle becomes a valuable tool for enhancing quality by systematically phasing out utility-based approaches in favor of semantic thinking.

Documentation schema and abstraction challenges

Addressing definitional divergence requires centralized specification mechanisms. Our initial documentation approach relied on Google Docs referencing Figma files with behavioral descriptions progressing through approval workflows. While functional for small-scale coordination, this approach revealed fundamental limitations: prose descriptions generated interpretive variance, visual references lacked behavioral precision, and approval workflows couldn’t validate semantic consistency. The documentation existed but couldn’t enforce the understanding it was meant to create.

Recognition emerged that each interface entity requires canonical definition transcending platform-specific implementations. A button represents the same human interface possibility - the affordance of triggering an action - whether implemented for desktop or web, in React or as a web component. Without this canonical layer, platform implementations inevitably diverge, creating user confusion and maintenance overhead. The challenge became establishing what constitutes canonical: which properties are essential versus incidental, which behaviors are defining versus optional.

The search for documentation patterns led naturally to Wikipedia’s entity treatment, which combines unstructured narrative with structured attribute tables. Cities receive systematic documentation through consistent frameworks - historical narrative provides context while structured data captures population, geography, governance. This dual approach seemed applicable: interface entities could similarly combine behavioral descriptions with technical specifications presented as field-based schemas. The model promised completeness through structure while maintaining comprehension through narrative.

Contemporary documentation platforms reveal both the sophistication and limitations of current approaches. Tools like Zeroheight and Supernova.io automate component scanning, enable multi-brand theming, and provide AI-powered documentation queries. Their technical capabilities appear to solve documentation challenges - until fundamental questions arise. These platforms excel at organizing information about buttons but cannot determine whether buttons and links represent distinct semantic categories or variations of a navigation affordance. They can structure vast amounts of data about components without answering what makes something a component. This limitation reflects not platform inadequacy but the absence of prior semantic frameworks that would guide such determinations.

The schema creation process exposed the knowledge acquisition paradox. Extracting explicit properties proved straightforward: colors have hex values, spacing uses pixels, components have names. But formalizing implicit knowledge - why experienced designers know certain combinations of visual elements feel wrong, how developers recognize anti-patterns without articulation - required different methods. The knowledge existed in practice but resisted documentation. Discussions revealed that participants could identify correct usage but struggled to explain their reasoning. This implicit-explicit gap suggested that documentation alone, however structured, could not capture semantic understanding.

Multiple truth sources complicated the documentation challenge further. Figma designs for design-led features embodied designer intent. React component libraries reflected engineering constraints. Industry best practices offered external validation. Each source claimed authority over different aspects - visual, functional, conventional - without reconciliation mechanisms. The multiplication of truth sources revealed that documentation’s fundamental problem wasn’t organization but arbitration: determining which truths take precedence when sources conflict, a task made impossible without the semantic UX practice to establish the categorical definitions needed to evaluate competing claims.

The completeness problem emerged as schema work progressed, manifesting as oscillation between extremes. Initial attempts at comprehensive documentation - capturing every state, every edge case, every browser quirk - confronted practical impossibility. The reaction toward minimal documentation - only the essential properties - left critical behaviors undocumented. This oscillation revealed a deeper issue: without semantic boundaries, no principle existed for determining what belongs in documentation. The fear of infinite regression competed with the need for sufficient specification, paralyzing progress.

Schema research crystallized a fundamental insight: structure cannot resolve categorical ambiguity. Schemas excel at organizing information once categories exist but cannot determine what categories should exist. Even the most sophisticated schema cannot answer whether accordions are components or patterns without prior semantic framework. The revelation shifted focus from perfecting documentation structure to establishing semantic foundations that documentation could then represent.

The resolution required inverting the documentation approach entirely. Rather than documenting instances hoping patterns would emerge, we needed to define categories from which instances could be derived. “Component” needed definition as a semantic class with essential properties, not as a convenient label for reusable elements. Components emerged as context-independent interface elements maintaining consistent meaning regardless of placement. Patterns emerged as context-dependent solutions to recurring user problems. This categorical clarity, once established, made documentation boundaries self-evident: document what varies from category definition, not what the category definition already implies.

The progression from attempting better documentation to recognizing the need for semantic categories marked a fundamental epistemological shift. Documentation transformed from the goal - comprehensive description of interface elements - to merely the medium for communicating semantic understanding. The schema itself required semantic structure not to organize information but to represent ontological relationships. This shift from documentation as repository to documentation as semantic representation established the foundation for systematic reasoning about interfaces rather than merely describing them.

Ontological foundations in knowledge engineering

Ontologies capture relationships, constraints, and inference rules beyond definitions and static property lists. The distinction between knowing that buttons are clickable boxes that can change color and understanding that buttons afford interaction triggering state changes represents the difference between description and comprehension. This distinction determines how we reason about interfaces: relationships and constraints enable systematic reasoning about valid combinations and transformations, moving beyond surface properties to essential behaviors.

Examining successful ontological implementations provided validation for our approach and insights into how semantic coordination functions at scale. Siemens employs ontologies in its metaphactory Knowledge Graph Platform for smart manufacturing, as demonstrated in a feasibility study where semantic integration of equipment, products, and processes reduced the number of production plans human planners needed to review from approximately 1,400 to 40, enabling efficient low-volume order execution across heterogeneous data sources. NASA’s ontologies support environmental control and life support systems (ECLSS) for long-duration space missions, including the International Space Station, by semantically modeling components like the Four-Bed CO2 scrubber to predict and diagnose faults, enabling reliable error detection and system optimization across distributed teams. Complementing this, NASA’s Space Life Sciences Ontology (SLSO) semantically organizes biological and environmental data from ISS experiments, facilitating knowledge sharing and analysis across research teams. Amazon’s Alexa leverages knowledge graphs for entity resolution and linked data, as shown in simple skill interactions where user queries like “In which century did Paracelsus live?” map intents to structured facts via the Knowledge Graph, providing accurate responses without developers maintaining custom catalogs. These implementations demonstrate that semantic coordination enables integration at scales where point-to-point translation becomes intractable, providing orders of magnitude improvement in coordination efficiency.

Design systems present optimal characteristics for ontological approaches. Unlike open-domain knowledge representation, interface design operates within bounded contexts. Component types are finite and enumerable. Interaction patterns follow established conventions. Visual principles have documented constraints. These boundaries make formal modeling tractable where general semantic web efforts encountered complexity barriers: the constrained domain enables semantic rigor without potentially infinite relationship management.

The implementation maintains deliberately limited scope. We employ a subset of the Web Ontology Language (OWL) - a W3C standard for creating ontologies that enables complex semantic representations through relationships and constraints - to materialize ontological thinking in its fundamental sense: systematic organization of entities, relationships, and constraints. Conceptualization remains grounded in existing patterns rather than theoretical completeness. Only demonstrated patterns from actual implementations or established industry references receive formal representation. This constraint keeps the ontology practically useful rather than theoretically complete.

A critical insight emerged regarding the bidirectionality of ontological modeling. Complexity does not accumulate as technical debt but instead gets captured and reflected back as structure to entities. When we discover that chips serve both filtering and labeling functions, this complexity doesn’t remain as unresolved ambiguity. Instead, it becomes formalized as two distinct semantic roles that a single visual element can fulfill, with explicit rules governing when each role takes precedence. This bidirectional flow transforms complexity from burden into knowledge, systematically enriching the ontology rather than degrading it.

The growing recognition of semantic modeling’s necessity manifests through multiple industry initiatives. The W3C Open UI working group pursues component semantic standardization across frameworks. The Design Tokens W3C Community Group establishes semantic specifications that transcend visual properties, moving toward tokens that carry meaning rather than just values. The UI Schema Community Group, launched in August 2025, specifically addresses the need for semantic coordination across design and development. These parallel efforts indicate industry-wide recognition that semantic foundations represent necessary evolution for design systems to mature beyond visual consistency toward systematic comprehension.

The combination of ontological structure with accumulated instance data creates what knowledge representation ontology practitioners term a knowledge graph - a network where nodes represent entities and edges encode their semantic relationships. This graph structure enables traversal, inference, and pattern detection impossible in flat documentation. The ontology provides the schema defining what types of entities and relationships can exist, while instances populate this schema with specific buttons, patterns, and implementations from actual practice. Documentation continues to serve its essential function of human interpretation and contextual explanation. The knowledge graph doesn’t replace documentation but enriches it with queryable, computable semantic structure. Where documentation excels at narrative explanation and usage guidance, the knowledge graph enables systematic validation, automated inference, and semantic consistency checking. Together they form complementary representations - one optimized for human comprehension, the other for machine reasoning - that reinforce rather than compete with each other.

Implementing ontology operations in the entreprise

Implementing ontological thinking requires establishing specific organizational processes and capabilities. The work demands expertise bridging domain modeling and design systems - an ontologist function whether formally titled or not. This role requires systematic exposure to and engagement with organizational data patterns and external references, maintaining continuous evolution as products and implementations develop. We made the foundational assumption that our decade of accumulated applications, components, and patterns provided sufficient empirical data to support systematic analysis.

Introduction proceeded gradually through familiar frameworks. Initial positioning as “documentation template work” enabled systematic thinking development without philosophical overhead. The process began with fundamental questions: what topics require definition, which systematic patterns apply, when to meet for coordination, what goals guide the work. This approach cultivated ontological thinking through concrete practice, allowing understanding to emerge from application rather than abstract study.

The operational work involves systematic fact production. Entities receive definitions through “X is Y” statements. Properties attach through “X has Z” statements. Inter-class relationships follow “X relates to B” patterns, with the possibility of reified relationships specified as “X relates to C through R” where R represents the relationship type. Constraints establish “C cannot have B” rules. This systematic approach transforms implicit knowledge into explicit, structured facts. Facts are considered true until proven otherwise, following scientific epistemological principles where provisional truth enables progress while maintaining openness to revision.

Our initial code prototype employs Resource Description Framework (RDF) - a W3C standard for representing semantic information - which preserves semantic relationships without information loss during transformation. RDF’s triple-based structure naturally maps to our fact statements while enabling both human comprehension and machine processing. The format supports automated reasoning and query capabilities essential for semantic validation. This implementation choice remains provisional, maintaining flexibility to adopt alternative formalisms as operational requirements evolve.

Three reasoning methods address different knowledge extraction challenges. Inductive reasoning revealed patterns through instance examination: analyzing chip usage across applications showed dual functions - labeling and filtering. In filtering contexts chips are clickable; in labeling contexts they remain read-only. This pattern suggests we might be examining two distinct components rather than one, though discussion remains open. Deductive reasoning applied logical rules: if interactive components require keyboard accessibility, and combobox is an interactive component, then combobox requires keyboard accessibility. Premises lead to conclusions through formal logic. Dialectical reasoning resolved definitional ambiguities through structured synthesis: determining what constitutes a layout saw one person suggesting it relates to grid structure, another proposing it serves user goals, a third person connecting it to device capabilities - leading progressively toward synthetic understanding of what constitutes a layout.

Complex boundaries often require combined approaches. As we explore the scope between variants and additional components, we encounter revealing inconsistencies. A combobox in a form can facilitate selecting either one item or multiple items. Radio buttons and checkboxes achieve the same goals but carry different names despite functional overlap. What represents the correct pattern - renaming radios and checkboxes to a unified “Choices” component, or creating Single and Multiple Combobox variants? Current thinking favors renaming to “Choices” as it better captures semantic function over implementation detail. This example illustrates the semantic complexity requiring navigation - it connects to variant definitions and represents one of our priority topics for resolution.

We established a working group combining designers and engineers meeting weekly with accumulating agendas covering topics including Layouts, Variants, Subcomponents, Abstract classes, Modifiers, Documentation labels, and the properties, definitions and relations of each. Participation remains voluntary. The group that joined shares a sensitivity to coordination challenges and their organizational impact - they recognize that semantic clarity reduces their daily friction and improves their work quality.

The group gradually developed confidence with the reasoning toolbox. Initial sessions focused on learning to apply inductive, deductive, and dialectical methods to concrete problems. As comfort with these methods grew, discussions became more sophisticated and productive. Topics that initially seemed intractable yielded to systematic analysis. The format evolved from tentative exploration to confident fact production, with participants increasingly able to identify which reasoning method best suits particular challenges.

Progress manifests through early-stage modeling. We’ve created a comprehensive table compiling facts, mapped to a Figjam-based schema that serves as source for RDF implementation. While this represents initial modeling rather than production deployment, the systematic improvement in clarity exceeds previous ad-hoc efforts. We are looking forward to open source the resulting schema and invite a community discussion to define its evolution.

We validate our findings through collaborative fact production. The team explores topics through creative investigation, drawing insights from adjacent domains like graphic design and architecture. We develop draft facts such as “layout represents grid mapping to particular affordances” and refine them through discussion when disagreements arise, continuing until we resolve all substantive objections. We treat facts as provisional and revise them when new evidence emerges. All in all, this practice represents an epistemological approach that enables us to balance systematic rigor with practical progress.

Semantic query, inference and reasoning capabilities

Semantic foundations enable systematic reasoning about interface design through structured knowledge representation. These capabilities, while early in implementation, demonstrate practical value in current practice and suggest productive directions for near-term development.

Two primary inference types emerge from semantic structure. Formal logical inference derives valid conclusions through deductive relationship chains: if primitive tokens must be consumed by semantic tokens, and the system detects primitives without semantic assignment, then these represent incomplete implementations requiring remediation - while semantic tokens lacking primitive values are flagged as illegal states that require resolution. Probabilistic inference identifies patterns through statistical correlation enhancing classic LLM inference with added semantic and graph-based explainability - for instance, answering through inference how to enhance the current navigation pattern benefits from a graph-based, semantically supported justification . These patterns reveal implicit design rules that documentation rarely articulates explicitly. Both approaches operate within ontological constraints, providing complementary reasoning capabilities.

The practical application of these capabilities transforms routine design system operations. Consider how teams might interact with interface specifications two years from now, when semantic foundations mature through production usage and tooling development.

Query capabilities demonstrate immediate utility through precise semantic navigation. Questions like “What components can contain forms?” receive answers derived from relationship traversal rather than keyword matching. Requests for “components requiring WCAG 2.2 Level AA compliance” return filtered results based on semantic properties rather than manual documentation review. Pattern identification becomes systematic - finding all navigation-type elements regardless of naming conventions requires only relationship traversal through the semantic graph.

Natural language interaction extends these query capabilities into conversational knowledge retrieval.
