Hello.
Thanks for reading my topic.
Now the plans are changed because Canonical has removed X11 files in 25.10.
However is possible install X11 in 25.10.
I want understand if Lubuntu team will continue supporting X11 in future 26.04.
I have devices need X11.
I like Lubuntu since 2020 and not want change to other distro.
I wait good luck for xlibre project. Wayland does weird actions.
I think having accurate information is important. Ubuntu uses the Gnome 3 desktop environment. So, when the Gnome developers decided to no longer support X-Server code in Gnome 49 then Canonical had no choice but to also drop support to X-Server. But note this statement:
Ubuntu 25.10 will only offer Wayland to those using the regular1 desktop release.
Itās a big change but it does not affect everyone:
Ubuntu flavours/other desktop environments are not affected
Running X11-based apps on Wayland (via XWayland) is not affected
xorg-server packages are not being dropped from the archives
Earlier versions of Ubuntu can continue to run GNOME on Xorg
What is changingāor will; this doesnāt affect daily builds yetāis the ability to run GNOME Shell on Xorg/X11 from Ubuntu 25.10 onwards.
Worth noting: while GDM can (once again) launch X11 sessions in GNOME 49, you canāt run GNOME Shell on X11 since has been disabled, as has X11 support in gnome-session ā changes which have not been ārevertedā alongside GDM, so⦠Donāt get carried away ;).
Besides, Ubuntu 25.10 has removed X11/Xorg packages from its default install. They remain in the main repositories for those who need them. XWayland is not affected by any of this and continues to handle X11 apps in Wayland-only setups.
As I understand things Lubuntu does not use Gnome 3 desktop environment or Gnome 3 shell or GDM (Gnome Display Manager).
Some time in the future the developers of desktop environments that are alternatives to Gnome DE will have to come out with their own Wayland compositors. Some of these developers are already doing this.
Thanks for your reply.
Even X11 not being integrated in Ubuntu 25.10 Canonical will doing support for fix or other type of maintenance ?
Xlibre coder had replied about that speedy change from X11 to wayland. Make sense. Have thing wrong about it.
In moment even wayland being āmoreā faster ( not is exactly much more faster, but an bit more faster and more simple to coding being that the main detail because GTK, GNOME and others software are dropping support for X11) I want continue using X11. I have devices that running in wayland lose features and has issues and being āoldā devices not will have priority to fix it.
I wish good luck for Xlibre.
Have an nice day.
Ubuntu gets X11 from debian, as long as they do not drop it you will find it in the archive ā¦
(same goes for XLibre, if it ever makes it into debian, it will also show up in the Ubuntu archive)
Please note that Canonical has nothing to do with these decisions, GNOME decided to drop it, weāre just following suit here ā¦
