I have just completing startup disc creator (ubuntu 24.04.2). after finishing I tried to resart the computer. It will not boot up.
I have set my boot up so that it asks if to keep going or takes me to settings. So, I have no idea what to do but I can get at it if somebody can tell me where to go and what to do.
Here is a list of options I get when I try to boot up:
LAN : IBA GE - 00C8 v1381
lan : IBA GE - 0400 v1381
USB SATA DEVICE 1 hdd
USB SATA DEVICE 4 hdd
I have tried to boot with each one. 3 of them tell me:
media test failure check cable exiting intel boot agent
the agent is v1.8.31
The first option, LAN : IBA GE - 00C8 v1381 doesn’t boot, forget what it says.
I have set my boot to ask me if it wants to continue or goto setup.
What did you do with the Startup Disk Creator? Were you trying to create a bootable USB/flash drive with Ubuntu 24.04 on it? If that is the case, can you not boot the USB or can you not boot whatever installed OS you have? Did you check the cable as suggested?
I fear I have a couple of computers that are no longer running as they should and had old ubuntu’s so I decided to make a startup disc creator and update both of them. One upgraded just fine, the other one refuses to run the stick that has the startup disc computer on it. It is just ignored. When it boots up I can look for the connection and its there - it will just not boot.
I suspect that I have to change something so that it will open with a usb stick. I think I saw it once and I need to get to it.
This error seems to be thrown when trying to boot over network but there is no network connection.
Perhaps you can check boot options in bios and make sure that boot from usb is allowed. Probably Secure Boot may interfere with usb boot, too. But try one by one, not all at once.
I have been wondering about this. I use usenetserver for my vpn but I have done nothing about it when I run the startup disc creator. Its a bit worse then that because I have no idea how to do that and, I suspect this may be my problem.
So, when I run the creator it comes up, takes some time and then it starts asking questions about setting up the ubuntu. Amongst other thing I need to open up my seting but I do get it done. I now suspect that there is more to do and I gotta get useserver installed as well.
I have a problem. My problem is mine - I am a bit demented (over 90 now). Its a bit embarrassing as I have been working on this stuff for years and now my memory is simply not very good. Anyway, might you, or somebody else, either steer me to the information or let me know about how I actually deal with the startup disc creator.
Anyway, I have been reading stuff. My problems are multiple. I have two sticks with the startup disc creator on them. I don’t think that the stuff on those get changed by anything but once its started installing stuff, in my case, I think its doing on stuff that I have already installed previously. The good thing is that I try and put everything on a sdd card. That being the case I am now going to blank out a couple of sdd’s and put them in a couple of machines and try and put the new system on them. This time i will pay more attention.
All being said I think what I really need to know is how to deal with the vpn thing. Other than that I suspect I might be fine.

I thought I had also told you about myself. I am now past 90 and am demented (dementia). I guess that’s enough…
I have 3 machines I now have to re-install. I magically screwed them all up. My plan is to clean a couple of ssd sticks and then use them to be the holders of the new systems. I will unlink all other discs, etc.
So, right now, I am using this machine to clear out the ssd sticks and then I will take them to the machines and run the startup disk creator on each one. This time I will pay attention.
I remain concerned with setting up accounts.usenetserver.com in my vpn but I am looking for a solution. If you know I would appreciate the secret.
You are aware that this is not the purpose of the Startup Disk Creator app ?
It is supposed to write an image to a USB key (or CDROM/DVD) so that you can use this USB key (or other media you created) as the installer to install from, you would not use the Startup Disk Creator on any of the target machines but boot them (all of them) from the USB key you created before with the Startup Disk Creator app …
Thank you for the reply…
I did that and it installed 24.04 My problem now is that the installation is a bit strange. For instance Firefox will not work. I have tried to fix it, have it fix itself, etc. to no avail. I have rebooted it several times. Tried to update it and failed, etc.
What specifically do you mean by ‘firefox will not work’? That’s pretty vague. What happens when you click on the firefox ico? Does it open to a default web page, nothing happens. The first thing I would suggest is to just run firefox from a terminal to see what happens and if you have some problem there could be informational output in the terminal.
