Cannot boot after UEFI Firmware update

Ubuntu Version: 24.04 LTS although it is just possible that it’s 24.10 (cannot confirm now as I cannot boot, certainly it is from 2024)

Desktop Environment (if applicable):

Problem Description: today (26 March) I received a notification that UEFI Firmware needed updating. After clicking through to install I reached another notification telling me a restart was needed. I initially clicked “restart later” but then closed my work and did it straight away. In trying to boot the system froze on a blank screen. I forced power down using the button and tried to launch again. I reached the grub menu and tried every recovery mode and different number available (6.8.0.55-generic, 6.8.0.54-generic, 6.8.0.40-generic and the recovery mode for each) but all hang on the following screens.
Standard booting gets stuck on

Loading Linux 6.8.0.55-generic [or whichever it is]...
Loading initial ramdisk ...

Whereas recovery modes makes it past this to

EFI stub: Loaded initrd from LINUX_EFI_INITRD_MEDIA_GUID device path
EFI stub: Measured initrd data into PCR 9

Relevant System Information: Juno laptop Nyx 15" Intel Ten-core i5-1235U (4.4GHz Turbo), 64GB (2x32GB) 3200MHz SODIMM, 1TB NVMe m.2

What I’ve Tried: I’ve tried going into the UEFI menu from grub and enabling secureboot but this changes nothing. Thanks for reading, I’ve been using Ubuntu as my main operating system for about four years but this issue has me pretty freaked out if I’m honest

It’s possible that an ungraceful shutdown can cause filesystem damage.
Do you have a USB with Ubuntu 24.04/24.10?
Can you boot into a “Try Ubuntu” live session?

In addition, UEFI firmware update resets to defaults. That usually is UEFI Secure Boot on and others. Did you change settings to install Ubuntu originally?

If generic versions, you need UEFI Secure boot off.

My Dell needed no UEFI settings changes, but only Windows settings. And it has Secure boot or signed versions of grub & kernel . But older Desktop motherboard had 7 or so settings I changed, some required & some optional (like boot from network). It requires UEFI Secure boot off as I have not installed the signed versions of grub & kernel.

Thanks both. This laptop was sold with Ubuntu installed, I didn’t install it myself. UEFI had secure boot off, I tried turning it on to see if that changed anything but it didn’t.
I’m don’t have a bootable usb but I’m going to try making one from my partner’s laptop and go from there. Can you say more about how I might be able to fix things from a Try Ubuntu session?

Boot-Repair can help if grub issues. It either updates grub or reinstall grub. Does very little else, but often grub is a boot issue. If not grub then system may be booting but a driver issue.

Report can help to see if grub is correctly installed. Or some other configuration issues.

Please copy & paste the pastebin link to the BootInfo summary report ( do not post report), do not run the auto fix till reviewed. Use often updated ppa version with your USB installer or any working install over somewhat older ISO. See second option on installing ppa in link below.

Perhaps, you should run a file system check on your partitions.
In a “Try Ubuntu” session, to identify your partitions, open a terminal and enter

sudo parted -l

Next, run the check utility based on the output above e.g.

sudo fsck /dev/nvme0n1p1

Or, it could be e.g.

sudo fsck /dev/sda1

Then, check the remaining partitions e.g.

sudo fsck /dev/nvme0n1p2
sudo fsck /dev/nvme0n1p3

So the really fun part is that now I’m hanging when trying to boot from the usb stick…

Update: I have contacted the manufacturer (Juno Computers) and they think there may an issue with the BIOS and have said they can re-flash it. I’m handing it on to them as I feel more confident with their expertise handling it. Thanks again for the responses
