Call for Testing: Steam in Focal Fossa

I am preparing an updated Steam :video_game: package for inclusion in Focal Fossa. It’s mostly a merge from the package in Debian Sid with some slight modifications.

Rules of engagement :clipboard:

  • This testing is only for Focal Fossa; feedback from earlier releases of Ubuntu is not required.
  • This PPA is temporary and will be deleted shortly.
  • I am interested in clean installs, upgrades from existing Steam installs and purge removals of the steam package.
  • I am also interested in feedback from anyone with Steam Contollers or supported VR devices.

Install steam test build for Focal Fossa :arrow_down_small:

The PPA is available here:

Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) and add the PPA as follows:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:flexiondotorg/mist

Now install or upgrade steam as you usually would :+1:

Providing feedback :loudspeaker:

Anyone wanting to submit feedback, good or bad, please provide the following information:

  • GPU Chipset/generation (lshw -C video)
    • If you have a nvidia GPU and the proprieatary driver loaded, also include (nvidia-settings -g | grep OpenGL)
  • Kernel version (uname -a)
  • Xorg or Wayland?
  • Desktop environment?

After testing you can remove the PPA using sudo apt-add-repository -r ppa:flexiondotorg/mist

It’s working well for me.

Are some of the modifications adding Vulkan 32/64bit drivers and steam-devices?
If so, I love it. With Proton, you could say the majority of games on Steam can use Vulkan.
steam-devices is also a great choice to include by default. It is a requirement for supporting my DualShock 4 controller.

I did a clean install of “Steam installer” through Ubuntu Software.
The “Launch” button in Ubuntu Software does not work for “Steam installer”.
Launching Steam through the Overview works fine.

No apparent issues here. Upgrades from normal deb. Launches fine. Plays my installed games fine. Switches to Big Picture mode fine. Steam controller works without any problem.

Anything else specific to test?

Ubuntu Mate 20.04, upgraded from 19.10. Xorg.

providing feedback for “upgrades from existing Steam installs”

Ubuntu Focal Fossa and Steam installed via apt
updated to latest on 02/22/2020
added “flexion” ppa
then did a full-upgrade that added steam-devices and updated steam:i386
steam:i386 (1:1.0.0.61-2ubuntu1~focal1.8) sobre (1:1.0.0.54+repack-5ubuntu1)

Thanks for the feedback. Based on what we have here and some feedback via community members elsewhere, I think this is looking good to go :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @Wimpress
I installed steam on an updated 20.04.
I get this log and it just closes.

I “fixed” it by removing the intel video drivers…
I had installed them in ubuntu (Mate) 19.10 to avoid videos tearing.
It seems to work without it on 20.04 (Mate again)
The remaining issue is the appindicator not showing the menu…
The issue was a segfault in iris_dri.so
