Hi, can’t find any posts that seem to have this specific problem, a couple of days ago my browsers started launching very slowly, like taking a couple of minutes to start up, I usually use firefox or brave but the problem is also with chromium and opera, tried unistall reinstall didn’t help.
However tor is launching fine.
Vlc is also having the same issue with a very long launch time.
No other programs seem to be affected, default video player, blender, gimp etc, all launching fine.
No new programs installed at the time the only thing out of the usual was I ran out of space and had to delete some video files.
Running Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS
Probably not the case but as you said you were running out of space… If you are using an fstrim capable device try:
sudo fstrim -va
It happened to me once and the symptoms were similar, everything starts really slow.
Thank you I tried it unfortunately nothing’s changed, browsers still take a couple of minutes to launch
Launch some of the applications that takes minutes to open using the command line instead of the desktop file. Maybe using the terminal it show us a clue about what’s happening.
Also you should open another terminal in parallel and run…
journalctl -f
… to see if there is some kind of error or warning during opening.
I tried using the terminal to launch vlc, it still took a long time, this was the output in the terminal: me@StarPhoenix:~$ vlc

For journalctl -f, I don’t know how to read it, should I post the whole output here?
Yes, no problem but please use “Preformatted text”.
Seems that it’s the problem. It fails to start service ‘org.freedesktop.portal.Documents’ with a timeout of 2 minutes…
Paste the result of this command:
systemctl status org.freedesktop.portal.Documents
journalctl -f:

I recommend you to uninstall and reinstall flatpak.
Do this:
sudo apt purge flatpak
And try to open the browser to see if it works as expected.
If you are not using any flatpak in your system just don’t install it again but if you are using some do, in sequence:
mv ~/.local/share/flatpak ~/.local/share/_flatpak
sudo apt install flatpak
And try again to open the browser and also check that your flatpaks works.
Blockquote Do this:
sudo apt purge flatpak
I tried this it says I don’t have a flatpak installed:
sudo apt purge flatpak

Package 'flatpak' is not installed, so not removed
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
linux-headers-6.8.0-48-generic linux-hwe-6.8-headers-6.8.0-48

linux-modules-6.8.0-48-generic linux-modules-extra-6.8.0-48-generic
linux-tools-6.8.0-48-generic
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 1 not to upgrade.
Launching is still taking a few minutes
It’s strange, as your journalctl shows:

Do this and try again:

Holy ****!
Try installing flatpak even if you are not using it:
sudo apt install flatpak
Is it that bad?
me@StarPhoenix:~$ sudo apt install flatpak~
[sudo] password for me:

Remove the ~ at the end of the word flatpak and try again.
No, there is always a solution. Problem is to find it…
Sorry
Ok done, it installed this time.
I checked and now everything is running as normal, vlc and browsers opening within seconds
Thank you so much ^^ , I’ve been trying to find the problem for days.

Sorry, I hope you see this, I uninstalled and it’s still working fine, again thank you so much, do you have any idea what could have caused the problem so I can avoid it in the future?
BlockquoteI saw it.
I have no idea, sorry. It’s something related with snap applications and I don’t have snap even installed.
No worries thank you again so much for all your help ^^
Glad it worked. Try to uninstall flatpak and see if it’s still working.
If not… just install it again.
