Are you using a wayland or xorg session?
If you have left things as the default it should be wayland so logout and at the login window choose to use ubuntu-xorg
I think that’s how it shows but I don’t use the default gnome DE so wayland is not even available to me.
you need DPMS be active to control brightness, but it is also a thing of xrandr and wayland may be not be in the knowledge of it to process it yet. Or use special monitor tool if available.
Thanks for the responses - am not familiar with wayland or ubuntu-xorg - is xorg another flavor ?
Xorg/X11 is the old display server we’ve been using for æons since before the advent of Wayland.
Thanks wxl but I am still at a loss on how to use this information.
Logout from your user session, wait for the login screen, choose your user and then type your password, but before you hit the login button look for an option to use Ubuntu-xorg rather than the probable default of Ubuntu-wayland.
I don’t use the default gnome desktop or gdm3 (or whatever DM Ubuntu now uses) so I can’t tell where in the login screen you will find the options or exactly how they’re worded, but look around, they are certainly there somewhere!
Ok I found the the ubuntu- xorg option. Now what do I do next?
I notice no difference
On second thoughts I think the wording under the web shortcuts is brighter!
Let’s ignore the X/Wayland thing.
I’d like to get some basic information. Pretend I don’t know a darn thing about Ubuntu and explain it to me like I’m 5.
Also, go edit your original post and look at the template. Provide the system information.
But there is no brightness controller as far as I can see.
Using Ubuntu 24.04 with a dell laptop XPS-13-9310
There used to be a brightness controller
The display seems to be dimmer after the upgade from 22.04
What exactly do you mean by this ? A “Brightness Controller” is a chip inside the electronics of your display controller …
I assume you do not mean the chip, so could you please be more precise what you are looking for ?
Normally the Dell XPS devices have two keys to raise/lower brightness located in the function key line (on my XPS 9360 these are on F11 and F12) depending on how you set up the F-key row in the BIOS you will need to use the Fn key along with the F11/F12 keys to adjust the brightness …
Thanks Ogra that was an interesting post - the F11/F12 keys did the trick!
I got the notion of a screen controller from searching the web for causes of a dim screen - and one post blamed it on the upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04. So that must of stuck in my mind.
Anyway thanks again and will mark it as solved.
