After modifying /etc/default/grub
as you suggested and running sudo update-grub2
, and implementing the suggestions of @rubi1200, I tried to reboot normally.
This led to lots of information being printed to the screen, but they quickly disappeared and were replaced with a flashing cursor which persisted for a few minutes without progress (so I assume the system was hanging, and turned off the machine).
I then rebooted into safe mode. From here, the output of sudo dmesg
