Backspace key acts like the previous arrow on Brave and Edge browsers

When I type the back space key instead of moving back and deleting a character it acts as if I had hit the Previous arrow at the top of the browser. This happens in both Brave and Edge. If I hold the Shift key I get the normal backspace behavior, but its slower.

This just started happening. I’ve rebooted and I still get this behavior. I’m on Ubuntu 22.04.

What could cause this?

Does it do this in all applications or just terminal?

Also, have you tried toggling the INSERT key to see if the behavior changes?

That had no effect. This is something that just happened a few hours ago. Before that backspace worked properly.

At least in Edge that is intended behaviour and goes back to Internet Explorer which also used the backspace key for going back to the previous page as opposed to Netscape Navigator and Firefox which use Alt+LeftArrow for that function. According to various tips I found on the net there should be an option for that in ‘edge://flags’.

It turns out that in this case the problem was the keyboard itself. I replaced the keyboard and backspace works properly again. I don’t know what kind of keyboard malfunction causes the backspace key to work like the Previous arrow in the browser.

Another problem solved without understanding.

You could use xev and see what it outputs when you press the key. Compare to the one that works. That may shed some light on things.
