App Center window won't open

I’m running Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS on the following hardware -
Hewlett-Packard HP Compaq 8000 Elite SFF PC
Nvidia Quadro NVS 290
8 GB RAM

  1. After initial install and updates, I got a blank screen with a cursor every time I booted. I even tried building the driver from Nvidia, but it did not compile (missing stdarg.h header file). The only way I could see a screen was to boot in recovery mode and continue from there. When doing this, everything worked.
  2. Eventually I found a solution which allowed me to boot normally and get graphics by following these instructions in the post by @marcelo-javier-ruiz in this topic -
[SOLVED] Upgrading to 24.04.1 LTS after installing Nvidia legacy 340xx driver
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kelebek333/build
sudo apt install nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver
sudo nano /etc/environment

and adding the following line of code to it:

GSK_RENDERER=cairo

My session is hanging, so I’m going to post and then continue…

[Continuing - looks like I have another issue with Firefox - huge typing delays from keyboard to window, many timeouts in syslog, had to restart Firefox.]

There are a lot of errors in syslog, not sure how much or if other logs…please let me know.
Anyway, here are 2 tests I ran:

/etc/environment
#GSK_RENDERER=cairo

I’ve uninstalled all the nvidia ppa code so I can now boot in recovery mode and run the App Center code.

From what I’m seeing, I should probably give up since I have an unsupported Nvidia NVS 290 - I’ve read that many have had trouble with this running 24.04.2.

I’m wondering if I could just upgrade my graphics card to something compatible that is supported. Any idea what that might be?

Thanks!

I have no idea if it is caused by the same problem, but I just installed Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS yesterday. This is my first time trying Ubuntu and I was just switching from having tried Fedora for a few days, so I’m really a beginner with Linux in general. When I was running Fedora, the App Store they installed worked fine. With this new Ubuntu install, the App Center icon is on my taskbar, but when I click it, nothing really happens. It flashes like it is trying to open, there is a little orange dot next to the icon to indicate a session open, then the dot disappears and nothing else happens. It seems like the App Center is broken right out of the box, but I haven’t yet found any discussions regarding it aside from yours. I am running an Acer 5733 with 8Gb Ram and an Intel Core™ i3 M 370 × 4 processor.
I do know that the Ubuntu install had some hiccups due to doing an update to the installer media to the degree that I had to redo the installation because the first time went off the rails. I have no idea if it’s the same problem or even related, but I just wanted to mention that it isn’t working for me either.

Well, I gave up and bought a used GeForce GT 710 off eBay for $40. Works perfectly! I booted in recovery mode, opened up Software Updates, and there were 3 drivers to chose from for the GT 710. I went with the default public source option and everything is working great for the past several days!
