I don’t mind discourse in general but i find all the scrolling really annoying!

yeah!..i feel the same way!
In a long thread scrolling can take some time. Keyboard shortcuts page up and page down help.
Vbulletin type forums look really archaic now but i still find the numbered pages easier to get through for quotes and comments but at least the discourse format is not like the reddit layout that ends up looking like a jumbled mess when a thread gets really long.
