My name is Andrew Strong (aka andrew.46) and I am here to apply for Ubuntu Membership. I am doing so on the basis of my older work on the Ubuntu Forums and my more recent work on Ask Ubuntu where I was elected Moderator in 2022.
Launchpad Profile
And I have signed the Code of Conduct in 2016-06-07
I spent many years on the Ubuntu Forums, starting in 2006 and was active there until early 2013. My contributions there was mainly in the old ‘Tutorials and Tips’ section where I created and supported several reasonably complex guides. Some of these were:
There was more work on the Forums but these represent my better work, all a little dated now unfortunately. Shortly before I left active participation in the Forums I also moved some of my work to the Ubuntu Community Wiki:
After I left the Forums I drifted away from Ubuntu for a while but regained contact with an increasing presence on Ask Ubuntu where I have been a member for about 12 years with more activity in the more recent years. I created several ‘Question and Answer’ threads which have been popular:
And there is some more work on Ask Ubuntu that is easily searched out, these are my personla highlights
In 2022 I took part in Ask Ubuntu Moderator elections and succeeded in gaining a spot. I have been working hard in this position for over 2 years now. There have been some considerable challenges that I have encountered, along with the other Mods on the team. In particular the arrival of AI generated material has been a challenge, along with the challenges of dealing with the company that runs SE. And of course I include the Moderator strike which I openly and proudly participated in. Some references for my work during the AI and strike period:
I am excited to continue working as Moderator in Ask Ubuntu. In particular I am excited to meet and deal with the challenges that AI is posing to Ask Ubuntu users. As well I am keen to keep working on myself so I can become the best Moderator that I am capable of being.
Your contributions to Ubuntu are mostly on the Ask Ubuntu platform; and while commendable and worthy of recognition, if Ask Ubuntu has the recognition structure to award membership - it would be the better avenue to apply. Similar to that of the Ubuntu Forums and IRC.
In any event - please investigate via Ask Ubuntu - and advise on the course you decide to undertake.
Your best interest is at heart here. I speak from experience as I gained Membership via Ubuntu Forums participation and can speak of the intangible rewards from the platform its self.
@andrew.46 has a reputation in the AskUbuntu space as a thoughtful and sensible leader with a very long record of contribution. My opinion is that he long ago earned membership, and I am pleased to see him pursue it at last.
Hi Andrew, been a long time since I talked to you on IRC and seen you on Ubuntu Forums and you were a long time Ubuntu Member in the past, looking forward to you being a member again as a board member and as a moderator here that is helping setup the Ubuntu Forum Support Category here, I was about to reach out to you to invite you to join us here to provide support here, you are an awesome person to work with and very knowledgeable.
Ask Ubuntu does not have the facility to grant or apply for Ubuntu Membership unfortunately. I remember I was an Ubuntu Member through my work in the old days at Ubuntu Forums but that lapsed quite some time ago.
Thanks for your kind words! I am a little saddened to see the Forums in their current form end but looks like there is hopefully new life here on Discourse…
@andrew.46 has been an incredibly dedicated and active contributor to the Ubuntu community through his work on Ask Ubuntu. As a fellow moderator, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing just how dedicated he is to supporting the community. He’s a great collaborator and truly embodies the Ubuntu spirit. I’m happy to support his well deserved membership.
@andrew.46 is a wonderful Ask Ubuntu moderator. My interactions with him, in a variety of different circumstances, have been consistently very positive. I believe he’s an excellent role model and has had a great effect on the community.
I’ve been involved in Ask Ubuntu with Andrew for a few years now. He has been an incredible asset to our community, both through his involvement as (currently, I believe, the most active) Moderator as well as his contributions and involvement even before he was elected to that position.
Hi again Andrew.
I remember you very well from the enormously helpful information i got from your superb long thread about using and configuration of abcde, the command line CD ripper which i used very often in those days when CDs were my major source of music.
Time has moved on and I’ve moved with it; it’s years since I last purchased a CD, however I still occasionally use abcde with the same old configs I used all those years ago.
I would thoroughly recommend you should be granted Ubuntu Membership once again and wish you all the very best in your time here on Discourse.
That thread on the Forums was so much fun. I was an abcde developer at the time, which is not as grand as it sounds as abcde is simply a monstrously big shell script, and spreading the word on the Ubuntu Forums as well.
Plus interacting with the Ubuntu Forums regulars who had a strong interest in manipulating media files. Yourself of course, mc4man, FakeOutdoorsman and several others.
And like yourself I have not bought an audio CD for as long as I can remember
Andrew it was a pleasure to be on the board today at the meeting to vote on your application, there was really never no doubt in my mind you deserve to be an Ubuntu Member again.
