About the Foundations category

Bootloaders, Installers, Toolchain, Systemd and everything else that makes up the Ubuntu Foundation common across all products and flavors.

Ubuntu Foundations covers the broad technology base that makes up all of Ubuntu products and projects. This is a very wide category to cover questions, changes, enhancement proposals across the common ubuntu base. A sample of topics that are on-topic for the foundations category are:

  • bootloaders, initrd, systemd
  • toolchain, glibc, compilers, security, optimisations
  • .isos, cloud images, containers, Ubuntu on Windows (WSL), installers, mirror network
  • deb, apt, launchpad archive publication
  • anything one might ask/post on ubuntu-devel & ubuntu-release IRC / mailing list channels

Just saying, when did this category get ratified? And what is it used for?

It’s a good place to talk about anything that isn’t specifically servers or desktops. So, that’s why @popey mentioned bootloaders, toolchain, images, etc.

Some of us have a look at the category every once in a while to answer questions, or to add interesting things about what we’re doing that might impact the whole of Ubuntu.
