A problem with 1tb ssd, root, ubuntu

I am running with ubuntu 24.04

It used to be that I could open Files and then everything connected. This would involve all the basic stuff like home, downloads, etc. then there was the other stuff like hard drives, stuff plugged in usb, etc. Now, when it came to hard drives, etc. there was always one called “Ubuntu”. This was the 1tb ssd which held Ubuntu and everything associated. Now, however, “Ubuntu” is gone. Its still there, I can see its there on Discs, I think its also in root but I cannot get there to see.

I have no idea how I have managed to get to this point and what happened to “Ubuntu” (which where most everything is). I would like to get that back. I am tempted to do something with Discs (basically give the 1tb ssd a name of “Ubuntu”, right now it is something mounted at Filesystem Root) to do that but I don’t want to do anything until somebody can tell me what is going on and if there is actually something I can do. My machine, incidentally, seems to be working just fine.

I should also note that I can no longer look into what used to be Ubuntu. I used to be able to goto /var/snap/sabnzbd/ to see stuff in sabnzbd like the ini file but, no more. Its now just hidden away!

After all the blather about I have figured out that my problem is just “Files” it has changed how it shows itself and it threw me. Apologies! Now all I have to do is to figure out how to deal with “Files”. Again - APOLOGIES!! Since I can never figure out out to remove something I have posted I’m just going to Solution it. Well, I tried but I couldn’t even do that. If anybody can just delete it I would appreciate it.

Thank you…

You did nothing wrong. The ‘Ubuntu’ link was to the root folder. I suppose they removed it to keep inexperienced users from saving and changing stuff outside their own home folders.

To get around the removal, you can make a bookmark for the ‘Ubuntu’ location which will then appear in the Files sidebar.

Click once on the address bar when it shows ‘Home’
address-bar
Type / in the address bar, press enter, and it becomes ‘Ubuntu’.
Ubuntu
Make a bookmark to add this to the sidebar - it initially shows as /, but you can rename it as Ubuntu if you want.

Thank you for the reply…

Files cleverly hid stuff. I comes up and shows what is plugged in. Then, if you make it larger there is an other locations. Then you press that one and and it gives you another display. Then you make that one bigger and, suddenly its all revealed!

I guess its another one that got ‘fixed’

Thanks again!
