Brand new Linux user here. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Completely overwrote Windows 10. No dual boot.
Using onboard screenshot tool via system menu, also via “print screen” key: “Record screen/screencast” function works perfectly, start to finish. However, screenshots are not showing up in ANY folder that I can see, and there is never a notification popping up at the top of the screen announcing a successful capture. The screenshot IS saved in the clipboard, though, and I am able to paste it into a document.
Also, (and I am just now realizing that this is the cause as I am clicking around in my files and writing this!) after installing Ubuntu onto my laptop, I loaded all of my old Windows documents and pictures into Ubuntu’s documents and pictures folders respectively. I am noticing that there are 4 total folders in my files that have a lock on them (including the screenshots folder). Each folder contains a file called desktop.ini. I just went and checked the old backed up Windows files inside the external hard drive that they were previously stored on, and that desktop.ini file is also in the same folders on that drive. It must have come from Windows somehow. I don’t know how that file got into those folders or what it is, but now that it is transferred into my Ubuntu files, it seams to be messing everything up. Don’t know if it helps at all, but opening that file with a text editor reveals:
I can only view or copy, but not move, edit, or delete ANY of the files inside those folders, whether viewing them from the external drive or from Ubuntu files. I tried just deleting those folders, but permission is denied.
How do I fix this and unlock those folders? My screenshots have nowhere to go!
EDIT: I just plugged my external drive into another Windows 10 laptop and took a look at those “locked” folders, and the desktop.ini file was NOT showing in any of those folders while being viewed on that laptop and there were no locked folders. So this looks like an Ubuntu issue. Now what?
I can’t delete that file from any of the folders. I tried and was denied permission. Is it possible to delete via terminal? That is what I am wondering. I would need someone to walk me through it.
Here is what I am seeing:
When I try to delete a locked folder containing the offending desktop.ini file I see:
When I open the desktop.ini file in text editor I see:
Permissions:
Before I overwrote Windows 10 with Ubuntu, I removed personal files from Windows and transferred them to my external hard drive via usb. After installing Ubuntu, I transferred those files from the hard drive, via usb, to Ubuntu. Now I have the issue of locked folders on Ubuntu. If I hook up my external hard drive, via usb, and look inside it at the files that I copied into Ubuntu, they show as locked. If I instead plug my external drive into my other Windows laptop and look at those same files that are in the external drive, they are not locked. Did that help? I am happy to try to be clearer if need be.
I dug around some more and just learned about setting custom permissions on folders! My problem is now officially solved. Everything is working great. Thank you.
