I am brand new to Linux. I am not techie and have no idea what I am doing. I bought a new Edimax BT-8500 usb bluetooth adapter for my laptop. My laptop does see the device but as “not set up”.
I downloaded the Linux driver files from the Edimax website.
https://www.edimax.com/edimax/download/download/data/edimax/global/download/product/wireless_adapters/bluetooth/bt-8500/
In the PDF Realtek Linux Bluetooth Porting Guide that is included, I see:
So, I open the readme text.
I go to terminal. Here is what happens.
Now what? I do not know how to proceed. There is much more to the readme text that I can include here if needed to clarify anything.

From the notes you linked:
If you have a newer kernel than v5.15,
the adapter should be plug and play.
What Ubuntu release do you use ?

So you have kernel 6.11, the device should just work…
Do you see it listed in the output of the lsusb
command when it is plugged in ?
You do not need to install a Bluetooth driver, click on the device that is not set up and do the pairing with it

Aw, thank you! That was not very intuitive at all, but it worked!
I have been using that same Bluetooth dongle for 2 years with Ubuntu kernels
