Xubuntu display resolution fails on KVM/QEMU

For me it’s Virtual-1 not Virtual1

 What does happen when you try?

On my laptop this time the XML edit did work; I can’t remember but I suspect last time I tried I forgot to shutdown the VM before editing the XML file hence I could not apply the edits I’d made to the file. Silly me!!
However editing the /etc/default/grub file was a failure and the VM still booted at the low resolution.

So a partial success though it would be so much simpler to change the resolution using the Display dialogue that I have always used before when running VMs of any Xfce systems, not just Xubuntu.

Sadly, I spoke too soon!
Following several reboots of the VM I now find that the resolution is no longer filling the whole screen but is leaving black unfilled bars at top and bottom even though xrandr shows it at the full 1920x1080.

Also using the settings Display dialogue still freezes the whole system.

So unfortunately it’s now back to the drawing-board and further attempts to get the system to use full resolution.

You might now be encountering on-board firmware (or hardware degradation) issues.

If you look at the monitor’s own menu options, does it permit you to adjust the display position/stretch with manual arrows, or an option to “scale”, similar to what is show below (for my HP w1707)?

I tried again today to get the full 1920x1080 resolution in my KVM/QEMU virtual machine of Xubuntu 25.10 by editing the virtio-video XML of the VM and so far, after restarting many times everything is working properly.
I have no idea why it did not work 4 days ago as reported in my post above.

I realise this does not invalidate the bug I opened about this at Bug #2126798 “Can not change screen resolution in Xubuntu-25.10-...” : Bugs : qemu package : Ubuntu but at least it does give something of a workaround.
