Xubuntu 26.04 in VirtualBox 7.2.6 has many display issues

Ubuntu Support Template

Ubuntu Version: Xubuntu 26.04 Dev.ed.

Desktop Environment (if applicable): XFCE

Problem Description:slight_smile: I have used Xubuntu since 18.04 LTS in a VM for email and (a)social media. Now I run into a number of basic issues, that would make Xubuntu unusable:

  1. The wall paper cannot not be changed anymore at all and I like to select the same jpg wall paper as I used for Xubuntu 22.04 LTS. I moved it to the Pictures folder in Home. I also can’t select any of the Backgrounds provided by Xubuntu.
  2. The screen size does not adapt to the size I select with the mouse in VirtualBox. It stays on 1440x900 with a gray area around it and on the reboot it returns to 1440x900. However some applications (Evolution) use larger sizes and I have to move that window to reach the 3 buttons on the right top to close the app window. I have and had no issues with 18.04; 20,04, 22.04 and 24.04
  3. Ubuntu-bug does not work anymore in the VM. After collecting all the data in a number of steps it crashes.

I have up to 65 VM created since 2010, that I run in VirtualBox so I can’t change to KVM. I’m afraid that I have to keep using Xubuntu 24.04 LTS for another year. I would propose that you add say the last 2 or 3 VirtualBox releases to the list of machines to test Xubuntu with during its development.

My Host hardware is Ryzen 5 5600GT, an APU from Jan 2024.

(X)Ubuntu resolute is still in alpha, and the Support and Help category is for releases in standard support only. Refer Welcome To Support And Help and note the “Before asking a question” list of releases.

I’ve thus moved it to Flavors-Xubuntu, mostly as it’s Xubuntu, and you do mention

as the Xubuntu section I’ve moved it to is NOT for support either.

Moved to Project Discussion > Pre-Release Discussion to avoid any confusion.

Thanks

Well, I tried Xubuntu 26.04 in a Virtualbox 7.2.6 VM, and didn’t have any trouble setting the display background. Resizing does seem broken (I could sometimes force it by going to Settings>Display, picking the resolution from the dropdown list, and applying it.) But this doesn’t seem new in 26.04, I tried Xubuntu 25.10 in a VM and resizing didn’t work there (even worse, if anything.)

I didn’t try filing a bug, but ubuntu-bug is not specific to Xubuntu. Can you provide the messages you see, “it crashed” is hard to diagnose.

(I don’t have any trouble with screen resizing in a VirtualBox VM on Ubuntu or Kubuntu 26.04 dailies, so it does look like a Xubuntu/Xfce problem, not VirtualBox.)

Like I said I only have issues with size I selected through the mouse dragging the windows to the size that fits my screen lay-out, that is basically something close to 1500 x1000 with on the right Conky with detailed infor about the Host. I think we see issues caused by the transfer from xorg to wayland. I have no issues with Ubuntu 26.04, that starts to work like it is ready.

Like I said the Xubuntu team should test not only with HW but also with VMs based on KVM and VirtualBox. Windows 10 users might use VirtualBox to try-out some Linux distros and flavors. Users in the EU can use Windows 10 a year longer. My Windows 10 is from Europe, and I still receive updates a few times per month.

Indeed, until October and that’s it.
