Won't boot after update

Ubuntu Support Template

Ubuntu Version:
Example: 22.04 .4LTS 64-bit

gnome version 46

wayland system

kernel version Linux 6.17.0-14-generic

Problem Description:
I installed Ubuntu on this laptop over a year ago and have had not one single problem with it until last week. About a week ago there was an icon in the top status bar stating an update had been performed and that a restart was needed to complete it. Go the next day and try boot up the computer and the problems begin. The screen to unencrypt the partition shows up. I type in my password and the boot process continues then for a split second the bios logo appears the screen glitches for a split second and then the screen go black. Back light for screen is on back light for keyboard is on and the fan is running full speed.

the computer is a Razer Blade Stealth with a Intel® Core™ i7-8565 with 16 gb of memory and a 2 tb harddrive.

During the boot I can boot into recovery mode and force the computer to fully boot and log into my account in recovery mode. Once fully booted in recovery the computer works but not perfectly. Videos a very glitchy with low frame rate and the fans run a full speed just to watch something on youtube.

I have been reading everything I can find from google but to no success. I have created a live bootable usb disc of Ubuntu. I can force the boot from the drive but once it ask to try/install Ubuntu it goes though the same process I can never get the boot to go into the next step it freezes on a blank black screen. I installed the boot repair apt from the terminal but it does nothing there is a program in the bottom status bar but nothing appears to be happening. Once In recovery mode I try different test and repair methods there are available though the menu but no change occures. On one of the memory test is give me an error of “bad shim signature”. I have no idea what that means.

I’m still fairly new to Linux and Ubuntu. I have learned alot but still have a ton to learn, but I want to learn. I have read everything I can find and every thing is saying there is something wrong with my boot files. One forum was recommending me to do some form of uninstall from the terminal but the warning messages it gave me were a bit intimidating and caused to me second guess trying it. I hope I give all or at least give enough detail to guide me to a solution I have no idea what else to try.

Hello crasher-88 - Welcome to Ubuntu Discourse.

Let’s see if this is a 6.17.0-14 issue.
Boot to the Grub boot menu and choose advanced option. In this list is the last booting kernel. Select this kernel and advise us here if the system performs as expected.

Are your details correct?

The version of GNOME shell is 42 and not 46 in the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (ie. the 2022-April release). A fully updated Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system is also at 22.04.5 (not 22.04.4).

Version 46 of GNOME is found in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (ie. 2024-April release; what 24.04 represents); and that release is at the .4 point release value. Ubuntu 24.04(.4) is also using the 6.17 kernel (if you’re using the HWE kernel stack; 6.8 if using GA); so maybe you’re using Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS and not 22.04 you state.

I suggest you check what you’re using, and if it’s Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS as I suspect, please edit your post & correct (and maybe also remove the word ‘Example’). Your mistake may not have been helped by your recent boot problems sorry.

When we boot using Advanced Options for Ubuntu and select a Linux kernel with recovery mode and then select Resume at the recovery menu we then load Ubuntu with an open source video driver.

The fact that you can load to a desktop environment using recovery mode and also the fact that the computer works but not perfectly is suggesting to me that this is a proprietary video driver problem. You do not tell us what video adapter you have.

If this is indeed Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS and with an Nvidia video adapter then it is quite possible that the Nvidia proprietary video driver is not working at all well with Linux 6.17 kernel.

What memory test option from the recovery menu did use choose to get the “bad shim signature?”

I do not think that message is at all connected to loading to a black screen. Unless it is referring to the Nvidia proprietary video driver. Is secure boot on or off?

Regards

Is secure boot on or off?

screen shot from the settings page

secure boot is enabled

erm, disable secure boot?

You might need to use Windows to update the secure boot db and dbx - databases.

Microsoft information on updating secure boot db and dbx

That might remove the error message about shim.

picture from grub loader.
the first option 6.17.0-14 has the same boot failure no log in screen and blank black screen and computer is totally unresponsive

the second option will load and allow me to log into my computer but is very . . . glitchy. Videos have very long frame rate. As I’m using the computer the mouse courser will leave . . . artifacts(not sure what other use to describe what is going on) small portions of the mouse courser will be left on the screen after the course has moved to a different location on the screen. High cpu use-age when watching videos fans running full blast and laptop is very warm

the third option appears to work perfectly videos seem fine fans are running but seem normal temperatures are slightly elevated from when not watching a video.

the fourth option is the same as the second but with out the artifacts

havn’t checked out the last 2 options as of yet

There are various reports of issues with the 6.17 kernel, try booting from the 6.14 kernel.

Boot into the 6.14 or 6.8 kernel and see what happens.
