Will it be possible to upgrade a 25.10 TPM/FDE machine to 26.04 without rebuilding it?

Hi, I have a situation where I need to rebuild my 24.04 TPM/FDE machine as something has broken and I need a newer version of Ubuntu anyway as Apple have changed how the USB-C magic mouse works so scrolling is not supported on my current build.
I hold customer data on my machine so really need to keep it encrypted but don’t want to go through the hassle of building 25.10 with TPM/FDE if I will then need to reinstall everything to update it to 26.04, so my question is, within the roadmap, will it be possible to do an in-situ upgrade (using do-release-upgrade) from 25.10 to 26.04 with TPM/FDE in place or will it need to be a reinstall and and rebuild, and looking forwards, will it be possible to do in-situ upgrades where TPM/FDE is involved?
Many thanks,
Scott…

Hi Scott

The short answer is YES, you can do an in-place upgrade of either 24.04LTS or 25.10 to 26.04LTS. Having TPM/FDE should not affect this.

The longer answer is YES and …

  1. You should follow this guide https://documentation.ubuntu.com/server/how-to/software/upgrade-your-release/ which, amongst other things, will remind you to backup all your data in case this fails.
  2. You can only upgrade once the point release 26.04.01LTS is available. I want to say this should be available by August 2026 (based on the release dates of 20.04.01, 22.04.01, and 24.04.01 ). But - caveat emptor - before you rush in, I suggest you see if others have any issues, such as we experienced with 24.04.01 Upgrades to Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS are enabled again
  3. If possible, clone your HDD before the LTS update in case it goes sideways.

I note you have asked a related question in this thread Plan for upgrades from 24.04LTS with TPM FDE installation . I trust I have not doubled up with this answer.

Hi Jeff,

thank you and that’s just the answer I was finally hoping to see. I get the LTS upgrade cycle as I run servers that use LTS and September is usually a good time to start looking at the upgrades there.

And yes, I had posted something similar but hadn’t got a clear response which may well just have been down to asking the question too early.

So thank you for answering my question and thank you for the clarity in your answer. It is most appreciated.
