Why we’re saying goodbye to “Software & Updates”

Moreover, I will recommend to include GUFW, or some replacement in Security Center.
This will provide the user minimal control over his network, and provide admins manage firewall via policies (via Landscape or Intune), and the same time make it visible to user, so he will see the grayed out management button with a notification that the firewall is managed by the company.
GUFW is just an example, since UFW is embedded in Ubuntu, and currently our company like many others using it for minimal configuration.
It can be replaced by any other Firewall solution, but having the firewall settings in the Security Center will make it consistent, and easy to find/use for the user that just switched from macOS or Windows.
Once again, it is my opinion based on my experience.
Our Company supports 60K+ users, and Linux users are less than 1% just because they want to switch to it, but is still missing some settings in GUI that are available out of the box on macOS or Windows.

Also, I think it would be good to include LACT in default tools set, it is useful and for gamers and for animators/designers.

Let’s please stay on topic.

This is a topic, months old, explaining a decision made long ago, and open for technical feedback and technical suggestions.

This topic is NOT “What I want bundled in the install image.”

This is NOT an topic asking for general opinions. If you feel strongly that you don’t like it, then DO something about it. Like create a tutorial or a reference. Patch the code to make it less dangerous. Or help answer support questions about it. Or offer a new use case that’s persuasive.

Let’s please return to the purpose of this topic.

Any plans to integrate Proprietary Drivers from Software & Updates into the new Firmware Updater and call it Firmware and Drivers Updater?

I think most of us using Ubuntu or Linux in particular want fine grain control

You are not including me in that assumption, are you? When did you put yourself up for election as the representative of “most of us using Ubuntu?”

If you need inspirations, just take a look at Android’s Developer or System properties menus

And another thing, the people writing software that is used to make up a Linux distribution do so because they have their own ideas about what an operating system should do and look like. That is why there is such a variation in Linux distributions.

In my opinion one of the great things about F.O.S.S., is: If you do not like what is on offer then there is nothing stopping you from bringing out your own Distribution.

About 10 years ago someone brought out a Linux distribution that had his favourite female singer-songwriter as the theme and the name. That distribution is still available as of February this year. Yes, folks it can be done.

Likewise, Ubuntu Unity started out as a personal project of someone.

Regards and welcome

The problem is that updates usually disable third-party ppas. With the Software and Updates app, it was very easy to re-enable them. Now, novice users may not know that updates for their software have been disabled and may not know how to re-enable them. This leaves them with a security risk.

Don’t confuse Ubuntu release upgrades with regular software updates. The former do disable 3rd party repos during the upgrade procedure for good reason. Simple updates don’t disable any ppas.
