Why can't I open some documents in Kubuntu?

I downloaded pictures from my phone and now I have no access to them. I do need them for a court case. Is there an app that will open up all of my downloads?

Please provide some more information.

We need to know the following:

Kubuntu version

Phone manufacturer and make e.g. Samsung Galaxy A17

How you transferred the files and where have you looked for them on the Kubuntu install

Thanks

When I converted over to Linux my understanding was that it is a very easy to use system. I find that not to be true. I don’t even know where to look for the correct version of Kubuntu! My phone is a Samsung Galaxy A16 5G. I transferred them with a usb connection and why is there so many different places that the files and documents and pics go to? I am looking in the Dolphin program and trying different image apps, but believe me, I don’t know what the hell I am doing. Windows was so much easier.

Not to be flippant, but you should go back to Windows especially if learning about Linux in any way distracts you from dealing with a legal matter in the courts.

You can return to Ubuntu and Linux at a another time in the future when you can focus on learning how to do things in a linux environment. But I would prioritize legal court matters ahead of getting familiar with a new operating system.

You can open a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T and find the version with this command:

lsb_release -a

In Dolphin, I would check in Downloads, Pictures, Documents as a start.

Are you saying there is nothing there at all?

What types of files are you transferring over, PDF, Word, image files, other document types?

If you are willing to keep the terminal open, we can try and find any files added in the past 24 hours to check if they were properly moved over from the phone.

find ~ -type f -mtime -1

Let us know if you are seeing files that look familiar.

That does me no good when my pics are trapped in Kubuntu. And I have been here for months and it is always the same… nothing works right here. How do you propose that I learn the linux environment? That would be wonderful if it’s not some IT structured information like everything else here. I can still remember deciding to switch over to Linux for the security AND the so called easiness of using it. So hypocritical.

I assume you want me to run that in Konsole? And no, these were added last August. I did see them at one point, but now they are hidden.

Ubuntu 25.10 is what the Konsole is saying.

I’m willing to learn what ever I need to learn if Linux is so much more secure than Windows. I don’t trust Bill Gates with anything.

There was a whole list of items that dropped down. But I don’t know what to do with them. I look into the documents in Dolphin and they go back quite a ways. It says that I can not open them on some and others just open up.

Are any of the “whole list of items” the images that you are looking for?

Keep in mind that we cannot see over your shoulder. We’re not there in the room with you.
Try to make your answers a bit more specific and detailed.
Help us to help you.

Another thing is that I tried to download 3 pics the other day and only one downloaded. Have no clue where the other two went. Sometimes they go to my pictures folder and sometimes they go to my document folder.

In Konsole, there is a list of items. I’m not sure what to look for unless it describes the picture it’s self. And if I do see a descrition that may be the pics I want, what do I do then?

Are you saying that you don’t know the filenames you are seeking?

Or are you asking how to identify image files among others on a list?

Or are you saying that you are looking at a bunch of different filenames that might be images, but cannot view the images?

Or are you saying that you don’t know where your files might be located?

Or are you saying that your image viewer doesn’t open? Or that you don’t know how to open it?

But it was your decision. So if you failed doing your due diligence ( by testing using a USB live image with your system before installing) of how you can adapt to using Linux for your day-to-day workflow, that’s entirely your responsibility. I don’t see any hypocrisy here.

Anyway, others here are willing to help so hopefully they can get you sorted to liberate your pics from Kubuntu. Good luck.

I looked through the list it dropped down and most all of them were referring to my Brave browser. Again, I am not sure what I am looking for when it comes to finding downloads to Dolphin files. In Dolphin it has a timeline of when items were downloaded and in August, none of the files will open.

The implication was that Linux was an easy program and safe. Where does it say that I needed to TEST anything. That is an excuse, not helpful. I have been trying to ADAPT to using Linux, for months. If it is so great, I shouldn’t have to TEST anything. And why could I see the pics at one point and not see them days later? The way you are describing thing, you need an IT education to even use this program. Not how it was advertised.

Yeah, don’t use half my statement to ridicule me… here is the whole statement….I can still remember deciding to switch over to Linux for the security AND the so called easiness of using it….. when does the easiness kick in?

Let’s please stay focused on the issue at hand.

Whether something has a learning curve or not really depends on the person, the situation I suppose.

Please answer @ian-weisser’s questions above so we can try and figure out what, where, how.
