Volunteers wanted for desktop bugs

What would you define as ‘old release’? I’ve been closing bugs only for unsupported releases because presumably bugs on 14.04 are still relevant?

The list of current and end-of-life releases, with dates, is here:

End-of-life releases you can divide into:

  • Recently reached end-of-life (past year or two, or five): Set to Incomplete and ask for more information.

  • Several years past end-of-life: Set to Invalid, but still ask for more information.

Any bug on a current release should stay open, but still Incomplete if the user hasn’t yet provided enough information. So bugs on current releases can expire too, and often do.

Weekly update:

We’re again making pleasing progress. Very nice:

This week progress is mostly steady:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRDHPxGBHqM6XkT_S8ggtYfD0xchKSUD_z9PopNVE3G1rU05fVSnxDGcDsEstl7gu7N-tzCU6mLUp2V/pubchart?oid=254968654&format=interactive

Although after adding some more packages to the chart it appears that a few core apps are in need of TLC, if anyone would like to adopt/clean up the bugs?

Many irrelevant posts deleted,

Reminder: This topic is for discussing people taking ownership of various groups of bugs and reducing the number of open bugs across all of Ubuntu.

This topic is not the appropriate place to discuss individual bugs. That’s what Bug Reports are for.

Ubuntu 18.04 (12 days after release)

Mostly good news:

Only xorg is lacking attention right now (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg)

In this week’s chart, huge news for ubiquity:

Thank you, someone…

The chart continues to look good. But I am considering dropping Firefox from it.

Firefox’s huge bug backlog is skewing our view of the other backlogs. So I wonder; if anyone out there cares about Firefox, would you consider looking at:

  • Closing old bugs in EOL releases; and
  • Subscribing to future bug reports, ensuring that duplicates and other invalid reports don’t linger.

I made a start but as Launchpad is timing out on me at present I’ve had to abandon any further activity. I’ll try again later today.

Hopefully you’ll see a huge reduction in the number of outstanding bug reports in 59 days.

I’ve completed about 50 today, concentrating on those still at “new” status with few or no comments added after the initial bug report was raised. I’m sure most will simply expire without further action being required.

I’ve also found a few that aren’t actually Firefox bugs so those have either been moved or marked as being “Invalid”.

Thanks Paul, that’s great news. In that case I’ll leave the chart as-is and wait for the expiries.

In related news, Ubuntu 17.10 will reach EOL next month. It’s not clear to me what day exactly but if we set artful-only bugs to incomplete pending upgrades now then they will expire after the EOL date.

Great, can’t wait to see for your post in around 58 days from now.

Most of the reports are for bad rendering of pages, no sound or video and for Ubuntu and Firefox versions that we have long forgotten about. The oldest report is for Firefox 1.5 running on Ubuntu 6.06. :astonished:

Anyway, I’m aiming to deal with at least 250 bug reports. I’m at around 180 or so now.

Just an update to this thread:

  • I’m now at around 500 bug reports for Firefox. Most of which will expire in less than 59 days from now.
  • I’ve also looked at Chromium.
  • Thunderbird is being investigated by gf so I have left him/her to deal with those reports in the way that he/she feels appropriate.

I’ve always said that it’s the number of bug reports that are a problem in Ubuntu and not the number of actual bugs. My findings over the last couple of weeks support my way of thinking.

I’ve had very little feedback from the reporters of the bugs that I’ve looked at but those that have replied have thanked me for what I have done or for “the work that we do for Ubuntu”.

Edit: and within minutes of posting I get a disrespectful reply from someone who doesn’t want to help…

Thanks Paul, your triaging work is much appreciated.

There are a lot of old bug reports against chromium-browser that are not relevant any longer, I did some cleanup a while ago and should do more of it, but feel free to beat me to it. I’m trying to at the very least stay on top of incoming bug reports.

Thanks Paul. You’re a champion.

I know some users do give angry and disrespectful replies when you’re cleaning up their old bugs. You have to ignore them because you’re doing the right thing. In my experience such angry users are only one in a few hundred. So well below 1%.

Firefox is our current pain point and but continues to experience a nice turnaround, so thanks again.
