Upgrading to 26.04 isn't working

Ubuntu Version

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Flavors

Desktop Environment (if applicable)

KDE Plasma

Problem Description

when I run do-release-upgrade, it says that I need to install all current updates for my system to upgrade, but I just did that, Discover says I am up to date on updates and have nothing more to update, so how do I upgrade??

Error Messages / Logs

when I click on the popup that shows on launch to upgrade, it gives an error “log” that is completely empty, when I run do-release-upgrade, it says

do-release-upgrade
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
Please install all available updates for your release before upgrading.

What I’ve Tried

do-release-upgrade, clicking upgrade in the popup that shows on launch

Run in the terminal

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Were there any updates to install?

The following packages have been kept back:
  obs-studio
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

do-releases-upgrade did not work again after running both of those so I imagine it’s because I need to upgrade obs, how can I make it not hold it back from being updated?

What does this show?

Post the full output between code tags please:

apt policy obs-studio

apt policy obs-studio
obs-studio:
  Installed: 30.2.3-0obsproject1~jammy
  Candidate: 30.2.3+dfsg-3~bpo24.04.1
  Version table:

 *** 30.2.3-0obsproject1~jammy 100

     30.0.2+dfsg-3build1 500
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu noble/universe amd64 Packages

I would uninstall the noble-backports obs-studio, run the upgrade, and then re-install it from the regular universe repository after the upgrade completes.

This is not correct.

It should be:

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade # or dist-upgrade

It is almost certainly why obs-studio won’t upgrade. the apt upgrade will only upgrade packages that are already installed, so long is doing so does not pull in new packages.

If you full-upgrade (or the older dist-upgrade) then it will upgrade all packages, even those whose update requires more packages to be installed.

Do that, and you can then upgrade to 26.04.

running full-upgrade still didn’t upgrade obs. on what gpmitch said, what commands would I run to do that? and would you happen to be able to help me backup my obs settings etc before doing so or will I have to figure that out myself?

Can you show the full output of sudo apt full-upgrade?

Thanks, and what happens if you explicitly ask to upgrade it, with a simple sudo apt install obs-studio, what’s the full output?

Huh

As this is a backport, and your ultimate goal is to go to 26.04.1, I’d agree with others, and temporarily sudo apt remove obs-studio, then do the do-release-upgrade, and put obs-studio back afterwards.

It’s not a backport. That’s the OBS PPA version.

ppa-purge ppa:obsproject/obs-studio to downgrade to the version in 24.04.

Then upgrading should be OK.

If it was from a ppa, it wouldn’t have a repository URL point to Ubuntu noble backports.

The point back to noble backports is from the package version above it, not the installed version indicated with ***.

Yeah, I see now. So Op installed from a ppa and then removed the ppa source?

Possible, or just downloaded the .deb.

If ppa-purge doesn’t work, then removing OBS altogether is the way to go.

This came up while running do-release-upgrade, how likely is it to lockup if I enable this? and what entirely is the downside to selecting no?

That’s something that is included by default in Ubuntu Studio, so just say “Yes”.
