Problem Description:
I have two questions; if anyone can help me, I’d appreciate it.
Yesterday I updated some apps and an update for Gnome 50 popped up (correct me if I’m wrong); I’m currently running Gnome 46.
A quick search told me that it could cause problems for my system, among other things. Should I update? Yes or no? If not, what should I do if I have to run “sudo apt update” and “sudo apt upgrade”? If I do that, will it update Gnome?
The laptop I use has the following specs below.
Does it support Ubuntu 26.04 LTS? You know how it is—an old machine with modern software.
Thank you.

I hink that’s just the runtime for the apps you install via Flatpak. It’s been a while since I last used Flatpak, so I’m a bit rusty, but I’m pretty sure that’s what it is.
That screenshot shows an update to “GNOME Application Platform version 50”, which is not the same as the GNOME desktop environment. I suspect it’s something to do with Snaps and their integration into the system, but I cannot find it myself right now in my 24.04 system.
Have you installed any 3rd party sources/PPAs that might be offering this? Otherwise, you should be safe accepting it.
Thank you for reply. I have some apps installed but almost form FlatHub/FlatPak. Don’t remember 3rd part sources. I think I will install Ubuntu 26.04 then.
Maybe just wait until 26.04.1 and do a release upgrade. At the moment that upgrade path has not been opened yet, so you’d have to do a clean install from scratch.
Yes, I have already read about upgrade without clean install on Ubuntu website. But i don’t know if I will wait until version 26.04.1 I want to test new features.
You can jump the gun on the release upgrade, as others already have, but you might run into issues. Somebody has to test that upgrade path, after all, so if you want to volunteer…
But please do not feel like you have to; it’s only a suggestion.
The Flatpak apps are currently being updated by their maintainers to the versions built for Gnome 50, that’s why you need to install the Gnome 50 runtime. A runtime is a package of the support libraries for apps made for a particular Gnome version.
Its all a containerized system that works inside any Linux (not just Ubuntu) without interfering with it. The older runtimes are retained as well if any Flatpak on your system isn’t yet upgraded and still depends on the older runtime.
When installing Flatpaks you always install the latest version of that app, so its a way to have the newest software versions on an older Ubuntu release.
