It gets stranger and stranger. After trying all the options none gave me a gfx screen, however, when I restarted after doing that it started with the ‘makem’ login gfx screen!
Should be easy now to log out and into ‘new user’? No because new user was not listed. The other user listed was my wife and no way is she new lol.
Just enter your user name manually then. I don’t even know if listing users is a thing.
By ‘Listing users’ I meant when I log in all users of the machine are listed lower left of the screen where you can easily change user. It is in my machine where I have makem and wife ‘listed’.
I still fail to see the issue. But I am also the sole user of my machine, so I have never seen it, because it might only show when there are multiple accounts.

You need to explain in more detail, because I’m getting ever more confused. Which other boot? Again, your machine’s hostname is “makem” in the above photo. It’s not a good idea to use such names, if they are reused to name other things.
Sorry if I confuse. I will say no more except to to say that the hostname will remain makem I believe when I boot and see users makem and wife and again when I see users makem and new user.
Sorry, that sentence doesn’t compute at all for me. When/Where do you see different user names (photos)? It appears to me that the graphical login started working again after doing some switching of text consoles and rebooting. Of course, you see different user names when you boot to a different operating system, which has other user names set up.
Do you still have an actual issue or is this about something else?
I am really sorry for this confusion I seem to have intrudced.
My original issue still persists: I am unable to log into ubuntu from a cold start because all I have is a text input for a very short time period.
This I believe is my issue.
Your photos was cropped too much, because right after the Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS makem there should be the name of the current virtual terminal (VT); something like tty1, for instance.
You can login to that text terminal, BTW, remember? Please do and show the output of:
systemctl status agetty@tty{1..6}
and of
echo $TTY
If you are very fast you can. I eventually succeeded, received a text I will post, then like the login, it also disappeared.
You know what, I think we got too focused on that particular problem, which may be caused by a kernel regression, so how about you do as was suggested and just boot into the previous one?
I run Windows 11 + WSL too and hit boot issues after Windows updates.
Two common causes:
Windows Fast Startup is on. It locks the disk.
Boot to Windows → Power Options → Choose what power buttons do → Uncheck “Turn on fast startup”
If you get a grub rescue or black screen, check if Windows updated and turned BitLocker back on.
Can you share what error you see when you try to log in? Is it a black screen, grub menu, or login loop?
