Details for Ownership handover request

If you are one of prospective leaders, have you tried to reach out current leaders? Did they respond to your contact?

The current owner of the LoCo is @aaronprisk I have contacted Aaron and we have spoken at length about the LoCo being inactive and that now would be a good time to try and inject life back into the LoCo

Does current leaders agrees to handover LoCo to prospective leaders? Yes

If prospective leaders have done any activities in recent 6 months, please provide brief report with links or attachments (such as blog posts, event reports, photos and more)

I have been active within Discourse more than anywhere just being part of the community. My Discourse profile will show that activity.

I set up the LoCo Matrix Room. I have reopened the UbuntuUK social media profiles on Mastodon https://floss.social/@ubu and the social media profile on Twitter (X) https://x.com/ubuntu_uk

The Discourse page is authored by me. About the Ubuntu UK category

I have a couple of short blog posts, only quick one off fun posts about ubuntu.
https://write.as/ernmander/plucky-papers
https://write.as/ernmander/all-quokked-up

I am active in the ubuntu Matrix Rooms -Ubuntu LoCo Council, Ubuntu Community Team, Ubuntu Matrix Ops, Ubuntu Discussion, Ubuntu Release, and of course Ubuntu LoCo UK

I know the above does not look like a lot, but I am active in the community every day and care deeply about the LoCo. I want to see the UK LoCo succeed.

If prospective leaders have LoCo activity plans for the future, please describe

The main plan is to get the LoCo up and running so that we can be there to assist in the Ubuntu Summit that will be heading to the UK this year. It would be a shame to have the UK LoCo inactive when this great event will be on our doorstep.

We will also be supporting the BarCamp Surrey event that has been posted within the UK LoCo Events area.

List of prospective leaders

Name: Ernie Hartley
Launchpad URL: ernmander in Launchpad
Discourse handle: @Ernmander
Signed Ubuntu CoC on Launchpad?: Yes
Launchpad Profile up to date? Yes
Short biography: I am currently listed as a LoCo Leader but I do not have any access to the LoCo infrastructure. I am an avid ubuntu user who wants the UK LoCo to kick into life again.

Once I get into it I will then find extra people who will be willing to help. Currently the UK LoCo Matrix room is quiet. I plan to ask for people to come forward to apply for LoCo leader too.

I have asked advice from the LoCo Council and am putting myself forward for a chance to make this LoCo active.

+1 for this request. For completeness, it would be great if @aaronprisk confirm that he is fine with the handover.

I’m happy to hand over the keys!

It’s great that Aaron is +1 the request, that basically says we have no reason to vote this ourselves, instead we should just help the transition through.

I note that Launchpad shows the following admins:

What about them? According to the launchpad page besides Aaron who joined last year, Alan and Dave both joined 15+ years ago. If they are fully inactive, with the concept of least permissions, it would be best to let them expire or remove the administrator bit.

Anyhow, since Aaron is in the picture he can add you to the launchpad team directly as an admin, no need to go through us. IIUC you already are a discourse moderator for your section.

So, regarding:

  • irc
  • matrix
  • ML
  • DNS
  • (anything else?)

do we know who are the current owners? it’s still generally better if the handover is done pacifically from the current holders of those resources, rather than us “forcing” them through.

I was added by Alan Pope some time ago as the team was largely defunct and it’s mostly been quiet since that point. I’m happy to add Ernie to the team and we can see if the other folks on there still want to remain at the helm with us.

Thank you for the kind reply.

I am already admin for the Matrix room.

As for Mailing List, DNS and WiKi I assumed Aaron had these handed over to him. I may be wrong. If it’s not Aaron on these then I probably don’t have coms with whoever may own them.

I’ll leave IRC as is as we are supposed to be using Matrix as official coms.

Hopefully this reply will work as I am on mobile at the mo.

Thank you all for the help and advice on this. It really is much appreciated.

I doubt I will gain access to the WiKi and Mailing list feature as they may be shutting down.

IRC, I am not interested in ownership as we are supposed to be using Matrix.

Current website is not functional.

Access to a UK LoCo email would be a benefit, not sure if these are a thing.

I am happy to continue with just Discourse and Matrix as the tools I have. If I am successful in the handover request I would just ask that I have the correct permissions to Discourse.

Thank you for all the great advice on this process.

This also looks good enough to me. However, I would like to see more people involved with leadership, one or two people, so that things don’t get too much dependent on one single person. @Ernmander have managed to speak with more people who are motivated by this?

Thank you for the question. I have said that I would also like more people involved in the leadership. The LoCo Council did reach out to others 10 months ago, but nobody came forward. As it stands I am the only person to come forward to get the LoCo back active.

My plan is to try and convince more activity into our Matrix area and keep canvassing people in Matrix and on the socials to come forward to be LoCo leaders for this LoCo. cc @sukso96100

I recommend trying to get some people involved in activities the earliest as possible, even before there’s a new recognized LoCo leadership. Early LoCo Teams started as a group of people on a mailing list for that country’s language, doing things even before there was the concept of LoCo, and of LoCo recognition.

Start simple, and start small! Get people into a place where they can have a chat and use a laptop, do it regularly. Show them the ropes about Ubuntu and the Ubuntu Community. It will take time (maybe even years) and persistence, but eventually a group of co-leaders will raise from there.

One more thing: try to bring people to the discourse, community can come from helping each other online as well.

This is great advice. I will definitely take all the advice on board. Bringing people to Discourse is a great idea. At the end of the day I only have access to Discourse and Matrix for now. If I am successful in the hand over I am committed to bring more LoCo leaders to the team via all the methods I have at hand. I will also be asking the LoCo Council for advice on all things LoCo.

Take advice also from other LoCo leaders and community leaders, not just the LoCo Council. Try your own ideas, some of them will work, others will fail, but that’s how it works, we learn, adapt and improve.

That is brilliant advice. I will most definitely do that. Such good advice.
