Ubuntu voice enablers

To coin a phrase- ‘Ubuntu can’t tell me anything’

Where are we up-to with speaking to Ubuntu?strong text

Topic moved to the Lounge, which is for more general types of discussions and this is not about feedback for this site.

Could you please elaborate on the subject since it is not very clear what you mean.

Thanks.

I suppose what I meant to ask and I got the idea from the commodore sid chip, is that whilst Apple has Siri

… what does Ubuntu have?

Ubuntu is a snapshot compendium of many hundreds of independent projects with a light sprinkling of compatibility sauce. The implication that Ubuntu should include feature-parity with every bell and whistle of proprietary OS seems unreasonable. Copying others is simply not all that interesting to many Debian and Ubuntu developers.

Are you asking if there is independent speech-recognition software in the Ubuntu repositories? There is. Do feel free to try them and publish your reviews and recommendation.

Or are you asking if you can use that software to control Ubuntu? The closest I saw was Unity’s HUD, but the subsequent change back to Gnome a decade ago dead-ended that add-on. I have seen limited community efforts to resurrect voice control, and something great might be out there overlooked by me.

Or are you asking if Ubuntu developers (or Canonical engineers) have developed such recognition and/or control software specifically for Ubuntu? Have not noticed any.

When you say compatibility I get nervous, but it’s the last paragraph that caught my attention.

When you say ‘Have not noticed any’ what program would it take to implement voice control at system stage?

Also what software already exists to this direction?

Oh, perhaps people are against voice-notes?

What a curious question to ask.

You didn’t specify voice-notes. That’s new.
You earlier noted Siri as your yardstick.
Those are very different, so it’s again unclear what you might be seeking.

I want to talk to my computer the same way that you can talk to Mycroft. Is that clear?

It appears we are doing the three monkeys whereby Ubuntu cannot hear the problem thereby Nobody is talking about it.

So I suppose we are still either trying to ask about one note & what happened to that & Apple voice dictation in notes (which IS enabled).

But why not system-wide?

Actually maybe I am feeding the wrong birds, dunno.

It’s okay i have realised what i am saying:-

If the service isn’t there; then you are unable to use it.
