Ubuntu Summit Extended 25.10 UK LoCo Live Stream Event

Hello fellow Ubuntu UK LoCo

You have probably seen the Ubuntu Summit blog post about this years summit Ubuntu Summit 25.10 | Ubuntu

The Ubuntu Summit this year is in our back yard. The event is a live stream event.

With this in mind I was wondering if UK LoCo gang would like to attend a “Watch the live stream” event? If we organize a place to host the event would you be interested in attending?

The community admins have put out a link for anyone to apply to host a party. “Are you looking to organize a local meetup to celebrate the release of Ubuntu and engage the Ubuntu Summit remotely? Share your idea, let us know what you are aiming for. The Ubuntu team might be able to help you achieve your goals!

Fellow UK LoCo I am just posting this here to gauge interest, also to discuss how we may organize our own event or even smaller more localized events…

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, either here or in our Matrix room.

Cool, hopefully we can sort out some venues for people to attend. There is absolutely no pressure on anyone. :slightly_smiling_face:

Cant attend as i have to be home in Sweden then after all

Hope you have a great time in Sweden. Doesn’t look like there is any appetite for a streaming meetup yet.

At the very least we need to promote the matrix chatroom for live discussion and socialising. I’ve thought about maybe also having a video call active for people to drop into and out of throughout the event to attempt to simulate the hallway track

Im definitely willing and able to meet up in person somewhere in the south of England - I’m around the north Hampshire area, and anywhere within easy train ride is good for me.

This is an excellent idea. I have been periodically pinging out the link to our Matrix room on our social media accounts. Love the idea of the video call open during the summit.

I’m same as you I am in south. South Oxfordshire for me. It’s a shame they didn’t invite members of the UK LoCo to London to watch the event in person while they stream the event to the rest of the world. Definitely would like an in person UK LoCo meetup at some point, that would be cool.

Nice one. I managed to watch Day 1 and half of Day 2. I had a prior engagement that I needed to be at in the afternoon.

The UK Community were also live chatting in our Matrix room too.

Dear @Ernmander ,

It was a good summit. I learnt a lot. :slightly_smiling_face:

Is this a UK specific Matrix room capability or is there an overarching Canonical Ubuntu capability.

How do I access this? Are you able to share a URL?

Yours,
York

Hi

Yes it was a good summit :grinning:

The Matrix Room that I was referring to was the UK LoCo specific one. There is an overarching ubuntu discussion Matrix Room that can be found here ubuntu discussion

Dear @Ernmander ,

Many thanks for your response.

Not used Matrix before.

Is there an Canonical Ubuntu recommended Matrix client to use?

Please see two of many of the selection presented when clicking on the link above.

Yours,
York

My advice would be to use Element as it is developed by the makers of the Matrix platform. To answer your question Canonical do not recommend a client, they leave it up to personal choice.

I was under the impression it wasn’t, ie. Install Element Desktop on Linux | Snap Store is what most of us are using, and this thread ( Shipping the Element Desktop Snap in official Ubuntu flavors? ) talks about it being added to the flavors, but its not created by the matrix.org [Foundation] and whilst there has been discussions with them to taking over ownership, they’ve not yet.

I’d recommend Element as well though.

I don’t use the Snap version of Element I use the FlatPak variant that the Matrix Foundation do own via Element Creations.

But yes it would be cool if they could take on the Snap package too for those who prefer Snaps

My apologies I should have specified that I was using FlatPak in my advice.

Dear @guiverc and @Ernmander ,

Installed the Snap version yesterday and will evaluate for a while.

Thanks for the links to the debates/discussions re shipping Element and ownership.

Dear Ubuntu Community ,

Selected the Element app via Show Apps screen.

Tried to set a password for Element but terminal doesn’t seem to recognize the keyboard key strokes.

Look forward to your suggestions.

York
