I created Ubuntu MATE back in 2014, and my involvement in the project is coming to a close. Perhaps you can help?
As another development cycle passes, I find myself lacking the time I once had to work on Ubuntu MATE. And, to be frank, I don’t have the passion for the project that I once had. When I have time to tinker, my interests are elsewhere.
With that in mind, I’m interested in handing over the reins to contributors who do have the time and energy to work on Ubuntu MATE.
If you are an Ubuntu contributor with experience maintaining packages in the Ubuntu archive and are interested in working on Ubuntu MATE, let me know. I’ve posted a similar message in the Ubuntu Flavours channel on Matrix.
Looking forward to hearing from passionate Ubuntu contributors
Hi @m_wimpress, I’m interested in working on Ubuntu MATE. I am already one of maintainers working on Ubuntu Unity and this flavor shares few applications/components with Ubuntu MATE. Even though I’m quite new here and have very little experience but I’m very eager to learn and I think I’ll be able to help with moving Ubuntu MATE forward
For those of us that have no way of technically contributing had in the past (in the now soon to be defunct Ubuntu MATE Discourse) had the ability to contribute monetarily through a link which was very easy.
Is this something that can still be done in a similar fashion? If a little cash flow can help keep UM going then I’m down for a little donating!
I’m interested in becoming involved and potentially stepping into a leadership or maintenance role to help keep Ubuntu MATE active and thriving as an official Ubuntu flavour.
I have a strong background in Linux systems, infrastructure engineering, and long‑term service maintenance, and I’m committed to ensuring that Ubuntu MATE continues to receive the attention, stability, and stewardship it deserves. If there is a defined process, expectations, or onboarding path for becoming one of the maintainers—or for assuming broader responsibility for the project—I’m ready to engage, learn the workflow, and contribute consistently.
My goal is to help keep Ubuntu MATE healthy within the Ubuntu family, maintain its packages in the archive, and support the community that relies on it. I’d appreciate guidance on the next steps and how best to integrate into the current development and maintenance structure.
First of all, thank you @m_wimpress for the work you’ve done on Ubuntu MATE.
I saw the recent discussion regarding maintenance and wanted to reach out. I’d be happy to help where needed, especially with packaging, testing, or infrastructure-related tasks.
I’m here from My8OSS, a small studio focused on system-level tooling and systems development. Contributions can be made in focused bursts when available.
