Ubuntu Governance meeting sync notes - 8 Sep 2026

Representatives from the Ubuntu Governance bodies along with various Canonical, flavor and community leads met virtually, on September 8th 2026 to discuss the state and future of the Ubuntu Community:

Welcome and Introductions

Disclaimer

It is important to note that the Governance Sync Meetings have a clear goal to encourage communication and collaboration between various Ubuntu Governance bodies. The sync meetings are not created to gatekeep information, nor as a replacement for proper, established governance processes, voting and decision making.

Round table

The first topic of our round table discussion sparked a very interesting discussion among the members of the Ubuntu Governance:

Does it make sense for Ubuntu projects to have AI community contribution policy?

  • We want to embrace AI in a responsible way.
  • It’s useful for people with language barrier issues.
  • The policy should have an easy and clear way to just close slop AI issues and AI PRs. So that maintainers don’t lose much time with sifting through AI. It’s to easy to generate massive volumes of slop.
  • We should add these rules in a clear place that is easy to find, bookmark, and send people to.
  • Rules can be a bit more narrow than most decisions. As long as we give maintainers room to quickly dismiss slop PRs. They can make judgement calls to not apply the rules super narrowly.
  • CC can start with this, but should involve TB at some point.

New Ubuntu Wiki

The new Ubuntu Wiki is about to go live. Old wiki articles are not going to be moved, but they are all backed up and publicly available, so important data can be moved.

Ubuntu Membership

  • We should make it clearer that contributing to Canonical projects/products should also count towards getting an official Ubuntu Membership.
  • Clearer documentation should be drafted and published to make this clear, and encourage more people to apply for membership.
  • Membership applications for contributions to LXD?
  • Historically, Canonical projects are seen as Ubuntu project by Membership Board
    • Membership Board confirms this is the current policy of Ubuntu membership

Discourse

  • Any plugins or extensions to use Discourse as the personal page as it used to be on the wiki?

Ubuntu Touch becoming part of Ubuntu update?

  • Members of the Community Council scheduled a meeting with UBPorts leads on 20/09/2026 to hash this out.
  • Mark supported the idea via email.

Ubuntu Members rename

People outside of our bubble don’t know it’s a fancy awarded title. They think it either means a loose “I’m part of the community” or “I pay for Ubuntu”.

  • Proposals
    • Distinguished Member
    • Project Member
    • Recognized Contributor
    • Distinguished Contributor
  • This doesn’t automatically have an impact on “Kubuntu Member” because that means you’re a member of the Kubuntu Team.
