Ubuntu Desktop 26.10 "Stonking Stingray" Roadmap: Building toward Ubuntu 28.04 LTS

Hello Ubuntu Desktop community,

With Ubuntu 26.04 LTS “Resolute Raccoon” now shipped and settling in, the Desktop Engineering team is already deep into the next development cycle.

Ubuntu 26.10 “Stonking Stingray” arrives in October 2026. While non-LTS releases often focus on delivering new capabilities, they also play another important role: laying the foundation for the next LTS release.

Much of the work happening in Ubuntu 26.10 is part of a broader vision for Ubuntu 28.04 LTS. That vision is centered around four goals:

  • A robust platform built on GNOME
  • Simple by default, flexible by design
  • A context-aware desktop
  • A trusted and integrated platform

Every major investment in this cycle contributes to one or more of these objectives.

A robust platform built on GNOME

Ubuntu Desktop is built on GNOME, and continuing to deliver a high-quality GNOME experience remains one of our core priorities.

Ubuntu 26.10 will ship with GNOME 51, the latest stable release. Our GNOME team is already contributing upstream while preparing the Ubuntu integration work. At the same time, we are backporting important GNOME 50.1 stability improvements to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as part of the upcoming point release.

We are also completing the transition from dbus-daemon to dbus-broker. While largely invisible to users, this modernization improves reliability, security, maintainability, and performance throughout the desktop stack.

This release also marks an important milestone for Ubuntu Desktop on RISC-V. 26.10 will deliver a complete desktop experience on RVA23-compliant hardware, continuing our investment in emerging architectures and helping ensure Ubuntu remains available wherever open computing platforms evolve.

Accessibility remains a major area of focus. Ubuntu Desktop continues working toward WCAG 2.2 AA compliance in alignment regulations such as the European Accessibility Act. During this cycle we are addressing findings from external audits, validating remediations, and backporting the most critical improvements to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.

We are also contributing accessibility improvements to the Flutter ecosystem, benefiting both Ubuntu applications and the wider Linux desktop community.

Multimedia support continues to improve as well. Ubuntu 26.10 will ship with GStreamer 1.30, including new Rust-based plugins. We are also improving codec discovery and installation so users receive clearer guidance when high-quality proprietary codecs are required.

Simple by default, flexible by design

Ubuntu serves a remarkably diverse audience: first-time Linux users, developers, creators, gamers, researchers, enterprise employees, and system administrators.

Our goal is not to remove advanced functionality. Our goal is to make common tasks simple while preserving the flexibility that experienced users expect.

One of the most visible examples is our ongoing work on a package-agnostic App Center. Applications will be presented consistently regardless of packaging technology, with unified search, ratings, categories, and metadata. Users who care about packaging formats will still be able to choose. Everyone else should simply be able to find and install software without needing to understand the differences between packaging systems.

We are also improving driver management. Better metadata, clearer presentation, improved sorting, and explicit maturity indicators will make it easier to understand available driver options and choose the appropriate one.

Some of the most important work in this cycle will not immediately be visible to users.

We are completing the design of a simplified installation experience that dramatically reduces complexity during partitioning and storage configuration. The new design focuses on safe defaults, guided workflows, and progressive disclosure of advanced functionality.

Alongside this, we are designing a new onboarding experience that moves personalization and system setup into a dedicated first-boot experience. Rather than asking users to make every decision during installation, Ubuntu will guide them through meaningful choices after the system is installed and running. As with today’s installer, these onboarding workflows will be configurable and automatable for organizations deploying Ubuntu at scale.

These projects are targeted toward Ubuntu 28.04 LTS, but the design decisions that shape them are happening now.

A context-aware desktop

Computing is entering a new era.

For decades, desktop environments have relied on users manually navigating applications, files, settings, and interfaces. We believe the next evolution of the desktop is a system that understands context, intent, and user goals.

Earlier this year, Jon Seager shared Canonical’s broader vision for AI in Ubuntu in his post, The Future of AI in Ubuntu, and expanded on that vision during his Ubuntu Summit keynote. The focus is not simply to add AI features to Ubuntu, but to build an operating system that can better understand and assist users while remaining aligned with Ubuntu’s values of openness, privacy, and user choice.

Within Ubuntu Desktop, this work takes shape as the Context-Aware Desktop.

Our vision is not a chat window bolted onto the desktop. It is a desktop that can understand what the user is trying to achieve and assist in accomplishing it by combining information from applications, services, and the desktop environment itself.

As part of this effort, we are also exploring voice interaction through an on-device speech-to-text engine integrated as a native desktop input method, providing a foundation for fast, private, and offline voice interaction.

We believe this approach can make powerful Linux capabilities more accessible while reducing the complexity traditionally associated with desktop computing.

This is a long-term investment extending beyond Ubuntu 26.10, but this release is where many of the key architectural decisions begin.

A trusted and integrated platform

Trust has always been a core Ubuntu value.

Whether Ubuntu is running on a personal laptop, a developer workstation, or within a large enterprise fleet, users must be able to trust the platform and integrate it into their existing environments.

On the enterprise identity front, authd continues to mature significantly.

Ubuntu 26.10 adds Microsoft password and MFA authentication, enabling users to authenticate using their Microsoft credentials while receiving approval requests directly through Microsoft Authenticator.

We are also introducing support for deriving UID and GID values directly from identity provider attributes, improving consistency of file ownership and permissions across managed fleets.

Administrators will be able to disable local password authentication for remotely managed accounts, enforcing identity-provider-based authentication policies where required.

We are simultaneously increasing automated test coverage across the authd stack to improve reliability and confidence in future releases.

Enterprise networking also improves with support for PKCS#11 and smart-card authentication within NetworkManager. This enables VPN authentication using hardware tokens such as YubiKeys through standard desktop interfaces.

For OEM and hardware partners, Ubuntu 26.10 introduces Ubuntu Certified hardware information directly within GNOME Settings, making certification status visible and easier to discover.

Trust also depends on knowledge and transparency.

This cycle includes bringing the new Ubuntu Wiki platform into production, consolidating desktop-related documentation under unified Ubuntu and Canonical URLs, improving authd documentation, and launching a dedicated accessibility information site.

Finally, our WSL team continues to invest in performance, image size optimization, documentation quality, and long-term maintainability of Ubuntu on Windows.

Looking ahead

Some of the work described here will be immediately visible in Ubuntu 26.10. Other investments are laying foundations whose full impact will emerge over the coming releases.

As computing continues to evolve, our goal is not simply to keep pace with change, but to ensure Ubuntu remains the best open platform for work, creativity, development, and learning. Open source, user choice, privacy, and transparency will continue to guide us as we build the next generation of the Ubuntu desktop.

I’m looking forward to seeing all these improvements in the App Center. However, even though this is more of a Snapcraft issue, I believe the store needs a proper cleanup of unmaintained apps that hurt the service’s image, in addition to its UI enhancements. For instance, the qBittorrent Snap hasn’t been updated in its stable channel for 5 years, which takes away visibility from another, actually maintained Snap that is harder to find due to its name. I feel that ever since the Ubuntu Core Desktop project was a littlw paused.

On another note, in the previous roadmap, I mentioned the need to improve the window management tilling. I still stand by that. It’s not that the current one is bad, but in the era of ultra-wide screens and resolutions, it’s no longer a great option. Of course, it’s nothing I can’t fix by installing an extension, but having official support always gives you better peace of mind. I could also mention Copyous, a modern clipboard manager for GNOME, but I won’t push my luck with too many wishes, haha.

Overall, I’m happy with how Ubuntu 26.04 turned out. I’ve run into an issue with AMD and the kernel that hasn’t been resolved through the standard update channel yet (though it is available in the proposed channel). This leads me to suggest that when an Ubuntu release ships with a brand-new kernel, it should receive more frequent updates during the initial weeks so these bugs can be ironed out quickly.

To put it in perspective, my AMD/kernel issue was already fixed in version 7.0.1 by late April, but it won’t hit the stable update channel until June 22nd. I’ve seen many users on Reddit dealing with the exact same thing. Therefore, if the goal is to keep pushing for the latest kernel, I’d ask for a bit more agility in addressing these early teething issues. To be fair, that can swing both ways; rushing a hotfix might be the very cause of a regression for others. I, for one, am very pleased with Canonical’s commitment to ship with the latest kernel, in an LTS release no less. If one has issues running that from the outset, it’s at least somewhat obvious that Ubuntu and your hardware don’t play nice with each other just yet. As long as such kinks are ironed out by the first point release, so as to not cause regressions for LTS release upgraders, it’s all good in my book. Thank you for sharing this exciting roadmap! The vision for a “Simple by default, flexible by design” experience and the ongoing work on a package-agnostic App Center look incredibly promising for the future of Ubuntu.

Building on the topic of the App Center and software discovery, I would love to suggest focusing on a specific area for this cycle: bringing more highly popular applications to the Snap Store to boost its credibility.

A prime example of this would be Google Chrome. While official support ultimately depends on the interest of the companies behind the software, it would be fantastic to see Canonical or the Snapcrafters community take an even more active role in assisting these major organizations in porting their flagship applications to Snap.

  • First Impressions Matter: Opening the App Center and immediately seeing the most widely used, top-tier applications front and center would significantly help drive user adoption of Snaps.

  • Bridging the Gap: Providing direct incentives or dedicated engineering support to get these “must-have” apps officially snapped could make the software installation process truly seamless, especially for first-time Linux users.

I would be more than happy to see some details regarding amd64-v3 packages in 26.10.

Being using v3 for almost a year and I expected 26.10 to expand the strategy of delivering v3 packages. Including kernel, Gnome etc.

The presence of amd64-v3 directory gives me a hope 26.10 would deliver full iso for amd64-v3

I just want to say that I really like this direction. And that’s what I actually preferred after experience it on other distro that already implement this. I hope this including a lot of installation option like extra codec/proprietary driver will be on the new onboarding experience.
Especially since I quite often getting error when trying to do everything during installation (especially things that require internet connection and extra installation, the mirror sometime not reliable enough)

The easier management of apps, drivers and codecs is something I’m very interested in as a creative.

I do have a question - it is mentioned that the App Center is going to be “package-agnostic”. Any chance that would mean we get Flatpak support as well?

Snaps are great, .debs are great and then there’s a lot of apps that are Flatpaks and are great as well.

Right now the experience is a bit disjointed with Flatpaks as we get both the App Center and the GNOME Software center installed. I think it would be great if we had support for all of those in one place if possible.

As a Ubuntu user for many years I say that I have always found that the management of apps, drivers and codecs is very easy on Ubuntu. Such easiness is not new to Ubuntu.

Not a chance. In my opinion. I give you quotations from an interview to Jon Seager the VP of engineering at Canonical.

The thing is that the option to have multiple stores is not always the answer … In reality, every time you add another store, you are essentially giving those people root on your machine.

We get our apps from the Ubuntu archives. The software is curated and audited. Do not expect Ubuntu developers to audit the applications on Flathub.

if you think about just the notion that there is a store full of content that has been somewhat vetted by the distributor of the platform, I think it is difficult to argue that that is a straight bad thing

“Vetted by the distributor of the platform is what we get with Ubuntu.” When we, the user, install software that is not in the App Center/Store we, the user, take responsibility for the trust we put in the developer of the software.

Good points. A cleaner App Center with better handling of abandoned snaps would definitely improve user trust and discoverability. I also agree that enhanced tiling support and quicker kernel fix rollouts after major releases would benefit many users, especially those on newer hardware. Thanks for sharing thoughtful feedback, and your English is absolutely fine!

Maybe not with the App Center, but there’s always GNOME Software with the Flatpak plugin. Obviously, that won’t be there out of the box; I’ve just done a fresh install of 26.04 in a VM and there is no GNOME Software installed, only App Center.

And looky here, one @popey (:raising_hands:) has put together a Snap to help with Flatpak support; found it while searching for “Flatpak” in said App Center. It will install GNOME Software, if the user hasn’t done so already, IIUC. This way, nobody even needs to know how to install the latter by means of apt install.
